Superintendent's Message
Dear Frankfort 157-C Community,
September has been a wonderful month in Frankfort 157-C, filled with student accomplishments and growth for all three schools. The HCMS band proudly marched in the Labor Day parade, several golfers represented our district at the IESA state tournament, and the girls’ varsity softball team brought home a state championship. At Chelsea and Grand Prairie, students are settling into routines, working hard in their classes, and showing excellent behavior that reflects our district’s values.
As we celebrate these successes, we are also committed to supporting student growth through strong daily attendance. Student attendance is one of the most important factors in academic success, and the State of Illinois requires school districts to monitor, report, and intervene when students demonstrate patterns of chronic absenteeism. Under Illinois State Board of Education guidelines, students who miss 10% or more of the school year—18 days or more, whether excused or unexcused—are considered chronically absent. On our most recent Illinois School Report Card results, 10% of our students met that threshold, which was about 250 students.
This year, our administrative team has worked to strengthen its efforts to support students and families with attendance. Families will be contacted if a student is on pace to be deemed chronically absent. These check-ins are intended not only to meet state requirements but also to provide resources, educational supports, and community referrals where needed. Parents and guardians may also access their child’s attendance record at any time through PowerSchool, helping to ensure that families have the most accurate and up-to-date information. While we fully support students staying home when they are sick, we ask families to partner with us in building the routine of daily attendance whenever possible.
This month also marked the first Superintendent Community Report. At this presentation, I shared the district’s Annual Plan, which is directly tied to our Strategic Plan developed in collaboration with our community stakeholders. The presentation highlighted several of our long-range priorities for Frankfort 157-C. I appreciate the partnership and support from all who attended to learn and offer feedback on our district initiatives. If you were unable to attend, you may find the presentation slide show at the link here.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Doug Wernet, Ed.D.
Frankfort School District 157-C Superintendent
You're Invited to Tiger University!
Join us for an engaging Tiger U session all about executive functioning—the essential skills students use to stay organized, manage their time, and practice self-control. Parents will learn what executive functioning is, why it matters for learning and development, and practical ways to support these skills at home. This is a great opportunity to partner with our schools in helping children build habits that lead to confidence and success.
