Armpit, is that one word or two

Dictionaries don’t just record words—they track the way people use them, ensuring that language reflects real-world meaning. To earn a place in the dictionary, a word must be widely used, clearly understood, & demonstrate staying power. If a word proves essential, it becomes part of our shared vocabulary. Take armpit, for example. It connects, supports, & enables movement—things that often go unnoticed until they’re missing. Without the armpit, teamwork falters, connections weaken, & simple gestures—like a handshake, a high five, or a raised fist in victory—become impossible. And then there’s the name Excelsior, which literally means superior quality. Excelsior Springs excels in connection—bringing people together, making things happen, & strengthening the whole. Some places & roles exist not for recognition, but for impact, providing the structure that others depend on. So maybe it’s time to reconsider old definitions. Some words—and places—prove their worth not by how loudly they demand attention, but by how much they contribute, how well they connect, & how reliably they keep everything moving forward. So, who's to say to the armpit, you are less than, say, the shoulder or finger.

creating the town you don't want to leave

  • Canadian Pacific KC is planning to do some work at the railroad crossings at Italian Way & McCleary Road. It was planned for this month, contingent upon the weather.
  • Tree & brush removal has started on Dry Fork Greenway project located between N. Main low water bridge, Marietta Street bridge, N. Main & Kennedy. The purpose of the project is to mitigate flooding with a nature-based solution, creating overflow detention basin for the river to expand during high water. The project is located on property acquired during the flood buyout of '93. The project will be complete with native trees & plantings to restore the health of the stream. This is the first of 3 planned projects. We are seeking $1.5 Million in funding needed for the 2nd project.
  • We are out to bid on this year's street improvement project.
  • Citizen's Leadership Academy will have a evening and daytime option this year. This is a great option for learning more about the community. www.bit.ly/ThriveCLA2. Deadline is 2/19.
