OAKHURST 26-27 TEACHER OF THE YEAR!
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our wonderful kindergarten teacher, Ms. Kendria Paden, has been named the 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year!
A dedicated veteran of the City Schools of Decatur for 23 years, Ms. Paden has spent the last 15 inspiring countless students right here at Oakhurst Elementary. Her distinguished career has seen her shine in roles from Pre-K and EIP to kindergarten. She isn't just a teacher; she is a cherished colleague and a professional role model whose wisdom and passion enrich our entire school community. We are incredibly fortunate to have her, and we can't wait to celebrate her amazing achievement!
Congratulations, Ms. Paden!
School Health Staffing Update
We are sharing some updates regarding our school health team. Our beloved Nurse Jackson will be the school nurse at Beacon Hill Middle School starting Monday, March 9th. While we are sad to see her go, we are thrilled that her talents will remain within our school system, and we know our Owls will look forward to seeing her again as Bulldogs! Please join us in thanking her for her dedicated care and wishing her the best.
We are excited to welcome Shanya Welsh to our school community as our full-time School Health Aide, beginning March 9th. We know our families will embrace her with warmth. Ms. Welsh has been fully briefed on all student health information and is prepared to offer excellent care to our students. For any health-related questions, please feel free to email her at shanya.welsh@csdecatur.net starting Monday, March 9th.
Stitching Success: Oakhurst’s Inaugural Sewing Club Wraps Up
Oakhurst's first-ever after-school Sewing Club concluded earlier this week, and we are happy to report it was a huge success with smiles all around!
This exciting opportunity was made possible by a Decatur Education Foundation Teacher Innovation Grant. First-grade teacher and seamstress extraordinaire Cindy Aldridge led a cohort of 16 first and second-grade students through the fundamental steps of sewing. Expertly assisted by kindergarten teacher Yolanda Kemp, the group learned the basics of sewing, developing their fine motor skills and creative patience.
To celebrate their hard work, families were invited to a final product gallery walk. It was wonderful to see everyone view and celebrate the students' completed handbags or book pillows.
A massive thank you to Ms. Aldridge and Ms. Kemp for spending their Tuesday afternoons teaching these students such a valuable life skill!

Wellness is an active process of making choices that lead to a healthy and fulfilling life.
This week as a family walk and talk or have a conversation at dinner about the following:
Mental/emotional wellness refers to liking and accepting yourself, expressing and processing emotions, coping with the demands of daily life, and managing stress. What mental/emotional wellness habits does your family already have? Name a mental/emotional wellness habit your family would like to start or continue doing? (ie. naming emotions, pause and breath breaks, having only one after school activity during the week.
If paying the registration fee is a barrier for your family to participate, please contact Stacie Kenner at skenner@csdecatur.net.
Food Insecurity Request Form
Oakhurst families, please complete and submit this food insecurity request form if your student is experiencing food insecurity within the home and is in need of some supplemental weekend snacks.
The Decatur Education Foundation supplies Oakhurst with snack bags for any student in need. This request form will go directly to our school counselor, Ms. King, and she will send home a snack bag with your student every Friday. Please go through each week's snack bag to remove any snack you may not want your child to have due to allergy concerns, etc.
