Discuss

The article begins with a familiar scenario: "It’s the middle of the school year. Your school district has a professional development day quickly approaching and someone turns to you and says, “what do you think we should do?”

  • As a coach, have you had this happen to you? How do you respond when an administrator asks you to to develop a PD session to "fill an in-service day"?
  • What problems result from the perception (or the reality) that PD activities are haphazardly planned to fill an in-service day?
  • What specific ideas from this article can you use to ensure that teachers find PD to be meaningful and relevant to their practice?

Apply

Create a PD roadmap that includes the following components (discussed in the article):

  • A needs assessment
  • A reason for being
  • A call to action
  • A follow up action that leads to classroom instruction

Tailor your PD roadmap for your own coaching context.

  • It can be targeted for a large group of teachers (full staff) or a small group (a grade level team, department team, or a PLC group).
  • It can be a single session, multiple ongoing series, full day, half day, after school meeting, etc.
  • It can include virtual and/or face-to-face components.

Optional (BONUS!): Create a professional development calendar for 2022-2023, if you have enough information about available days, staff professional learning needs, etc.
