This past week, our students continued to get "Wild About Learning." Our primary grades (4K-2) learned about insects and dinosaurs, while some of our students also began comparing, contrasting and creating their own stories. Our intermediate grades (3rd - 5th) continue to work hard in math and literacy as they prepare for their upcoming forward exams that will start this coming Wednesday, March 19th. Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest, as well as a nutritious breakfast to help them be ready to do their best on state exams.

This upcoming week, there is no school on Monday, March 17th as this is a professional learning day for staff. We look forward to welcoming all of our students back in the building on Tuesday, March 18th. If you have not done so already, we are hosting our family E3 pot luck at Fruzen starting at 5:30 pm. This is an opportunity that our families have been asking for so that our mom's can connect with one another. Please fill out the sign up genius below to register to bring a dish so that you can enjoy fun, fellowing, and food together. Mr. Karns will be helping to provide childcare, so all our dads, uncles, and grandfathers if you have time from 5:30 - 7:30 pm to help, please meet at Fruzen in the gym. We will be hosting informational referendum session in the gym on Wednesday at 4:15 pm for all families. If you have kids in the CLC program this would work really well as it should go until about 4:45 pm, which gives you plenty of time to get your child still after school. Thursday, March 20th is also our family math night! Please bring the family out and join us on this fun evening of learning math together! Spring Break is almost here, so let's finish strong together!

We hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend. Please take time to read through all of the important information in this week's newsletter, and reach out if you have any questions. skarns@sdb.k12.wi.us, or call/text at 608-207-2301

Early Childhood

  • The EC class is ready for spring! We had fun with shamrock art and music while we continued our bowling motor group. This week we will continue reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear with some corresponding literacy activities.

4K

  • Thank you to all who turned in AMAZING leprechaun traps!!!! Hopefully we'll catch a leprechaun tomorrow and find him on Tuesday! This week, children will learn about insects that hop or jump, including grasshoppers, crickets, fleas, katydids, springtails, leafhoppers, froghoppers and some beetles. They will learn how these insects hop and jump, which ones are pests, and which one works day and night. Please see the dojo/email from your child's teacher for the weekly virtual storybook and the Family Connections page.
Kindergarten
  • This week, the kindergarteners are studying the extinct species of dinosaurs! We are learning facts about dinosaurs and about tools that paleontologists used for their research. We are writing, drawing and measuring dinosaurs. We are reviewing our citizenship unit and practicing cooperation through play.

1st Grade

  • This week in literacy we compared and contrasted different versions of Three Little Pig stories. In math we started our new unit on place value. In social studies, Mrs. Van Den Langenberg's class continued to learn about geography using atlases. Mrs. Rohrbeck and Ms. Mendoza's classes enjoyed learning about dairy products in Nutrition with Ms. Maria. In Social Emotional Learning we continued to learn about cooperation.

2nd Grade

  • This week, second graders created several animal stories, collaborating with peers to use a rubric for scoring. After receiving feedback, they edited their narratives and created illustrations. In Social Studies, we explored the concept of budgeting while grocery shopping and examined three types of resources: capital, human, and natural. During Social Emotional Learning (SEL), we focused on cooperation by producing music using various sounds at our tables. In math, we began learning how to subtract numbers within 1000, applying strategies such as compensation and vertical form.

3rd Grade

  • Third graders are wrapping up their Eureka Module 4: Multiplication and Area. Our next unit is Fractions. During ARC, we have completed our rough drafts of the fairy tale stories. We will work on revising and editing before we complete our final copies. The students have enjoyed working on this fairy tale unit and are excited to be authors of their own short story. In Social Studies, we are ending the Colonization Unit and will switch to the French and Indian War. We also did some fun cooperation activities during SEB. We begin Forward Testing on Wednesday and it is very important that students arrive at school on time and well rested .

4th Grade

  • Fourth graders worked hard in every task they did this week. Our grade level goal this week was to get familiar with the Forward Exam that we will be taking next week and all the students did a great job learning the test tools and how to do their best when we take our tests. During math classes we became experts at strategies to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. In ELA, we are working hard on making our American historical fiction stories the best they can be. As we began Forward testing next week it is important that everyone is at school on time to enjoy breakfast if they want and be ready to show what all that they know.

5th graders

  • We accomplished our goals in literacy this week. They were to: get excited about space and to pick the coolest, weirdest, most beautiful, or most important astronomical object to become an expert on. During math we learned how to identify polygons by their properties. Specifically, parallelograms, trapezoids, rectangles, rhombus, and kites. This wee was civics week so we discussed issues happening in our communities, and some ideas of how to resolve them.
