MATH STATE ASSESSMENTS
The Kansas State Math Assessment is changing this year. Instead of it happening once towards the end of the year, it will be administered 4 times throughout the year now. This allows it to be a formative test that can help drive our teacher’s instruction.
The first QBA (new state math test) will be given to students on Wednesday, October 21st. The other 3 dates will be provided closer to those dates.
ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE: Our daily schedule for these days will be altered to allow for ample time to complete the test. There will be no Wolf Time, and each class will be around 7 minutes longer. If students finish testing before the allotted time, they will be asked to read a book or work on something silently and keep their computer turned off.
Technology: Please remind your student to fully charge their computers and restart it the night before the test.
Appointments: Please try to have all students in school this day as it is a state requirement all student complete this test.
Martin Luther King, Jr. contest
Entries are being accepted for this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. contest. Students may enter in the categories of Writing, Visual Art, or Multi-Media. The entry deadline is Friday, October 23. See attached flyer and entry form for more information.
WRESTLING INFORMATION
Our wrestling season starts soon! This short, club-based season is for boys or girls, grades 6-8. Practices start Monday, October 26 and are held after school each day until the season-ending tournament at OW on Thursday, November 12. See the attached flyer for more information
KAY Club Trick or Treat Night Drive Thru
The Annual Mission Trail Trick or Treat Night will occur on Monday, October 26th from 6:00-7:00. We are asking our middle school community to help us out by donating bags of wrapped candy. It’s a fun way to welcome our future Timberwolves and support our neighbors. Please send in any bags of wrapped candy between now and October 26th. The Trick or Treat Night will be a drive-through event, like last year. For those of you with elementary aged school children (or younger) we hope you can visit us for some treats.
Faith and Fellowship
Join us Thursdays at 7:15 a.m. in the main gym for a fun and meaningful way to start your school day! We will meet on the following days this semester:
Oct. 22, Nov. 5, Nov. 12, Nov. 19, Dec. 3, Dec. 10
STUDENT SAFETY
ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
As our first-quarter sports begin to wind down and temperatures cool off, we typically see an increase in the number of vehicles in our arrival and dismissal lines. Please see below for a reminder of our procedures. For safety reasons, we will be placing cones at the entrance to the parking lot to prevent vehicles and students from entering the parking lot during arrival and dismissal. This may add a few extra minutes to the process, but student safety is always our top priority. Thank you for your patience and help in keeping our students safe.
ROLLING GRADES
Middle School Semester Grades
Olathe Public Schools made districtwide gradebook updates for middle schools over the summer to better align grading throughout each semester. Student grades will no longer reset at the end of the first and third quarters.
Instead, Quarter 1 grades will roll forward into Quarter 2 to create the Semester 1 grade, and Quarter 3 grades will roll forward into Quarter 4 to create the Semester 2 grade. This change provides a more complete picture of student progress at the end of each semester and prepares our students for high school.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's (teacher/counselor/administrator).
4 YEAR ACADEMY PRESENTATIONS
The time has arrived to explore Olathe's Four-Year Academies by visiting your student's Academy of interest during our Open House events. Come visit the programs, meet the teachers, and ask any questions you have. Families can choose to attend any or all of the open houses to learn more about which academy is the best fit for their student. Open houses begin the week of October 20th. Applications open on Friday, November 6 and close on Friday, December 4 at 11:59pm.
