Week 11
Weekly Update
Dear Elmore School Families,
It was another busy week at the Elmore School. The children were full of energy as we began the week on the heals of the time change, coupled with the Full Beaver Moon, and the rain gave way to a blanket of snow on Elmore Mountain later in the week. We were able to to harness the energy and put it to good use in the classroom, as lot of new learning took place.
During literacy lessons students manipulated sounds by blending and segmenting words, and identifying vowel sounds, and adding, deleting , and changing sounds to make new words. One of their favorite activities is to use white boards to spell word to form a word ladders. First graders worked on words with beginning blends this week, while other students spelled on syllable words that ending with; old, olt, ost, ild, and ire. Students who are working on more complex spelling rules, practiced words with syllables -le and suffix rules.
During writer students worked on planning their opinion writing by supporting their opinion about a topic with reasons and using evidence from a text to support their reasons. While second and their graders use text to support their reasons, first graders only need to give their own reasons to support their opinion. This is a good example of how we meet the needs of 3 grades in one classroom. While everyone is learning about opinion writing, the expectations vary for each grade.
During math this week, first graders began comparing data presented in a graph or table. Second graders are amping up their subtraction skills by using place value blocks to represent and solve two digit subtraction equations that require regrouping (shifting ten) into the ones place. Meanwhile, third graders are learning about find the area of a figure using manipulatives such as patter blocks and square tiles.
This week we did some progress monitoring in both literacy and math. Additionally third graders participated in a School Climate Survey.
During an engaging science lesson this week, students classified animals into different grouping based on their characteristics such as: bones / no bones; eggs / live birth ; and feathers, scales, or fur.
During ECO on Friday students worked with a partner or small group to use clues to find a specific type of tree. After confirming the correct tree was found, students documented the characteristics of the tree using ipads to take photographs. Then they used a field build to fine their tree and name it. Later students will work with their partner to create a "field guild" card about their tree. During Forest choice, students whittled sticks, roasted 'Lil Smokey" sausages over the fire, and played Camouflage.
