February Newsletter
Message from Principal Vedziovski
Dear Horizon Families and Students,
As we close out another month, I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are now well into the third quarter, and it has been inspiring to see the growth, resilience, and determination our students continue to demonstrate each day. None of this work is possible without the encouragement and involvement of our families, and we are truly grateful for all that you do.
February is an important month as we maintain strong instructional momentum while also supporting students through what can be a demanding stretch of the school year. This is a time when consistent attendance, routines, and encouragement at home make a meaningful difference for student success.
A few important reminders and highlights for the month of February:
Please continue to monitor attendance and punctuality, as daily presence in class is critical during this portion of the quarter.
We encourage families to stay engaged by checking grades, communicating with teachers, and supporting students with organization and time management.
February is also a time when we continue to focus on student well-being, positive school culture, and respectful relationships across our community.
As always, be sure to review upcoming school communications for important dates, events, and updates throughout the month.
We are proud of the work happening in our classrooms and grateful to be part of such a supportive school community. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for walking alongside us as we continue this journey together.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need support. We look forward to a strong and successful month ahead.
With appreciation,
Seat Vedziovski
Excellence In and Beyond the Classroom
Honor Roll Assembly Celebrates Student Success
On Friday, January 16, our school proudly hosted an Honor Roll Assembly to recognize and celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our students from the first semester. The assembly was a meaningful opportunity to acknowledge the hard work, dedication, commitment our students have shown in the classroom.
Students who earned Honor Roll were recognized for their commitment to excellence in the classroom, while those who achieved the prestigious Principal’s List received a special reward for their exceptional accomplishments. Principal’s List students were invited to enjoy a special lunch with the principal—an exciting and well-deserved celebration of their success.
The assembly served not only as a recognition of grades, but also as a reminder of the importance of setting goals, staying focused, and supporting one another as a school community. It was inspiring to see so many students honored for their efforts and to celebrate the positive academic culture we continue to build together.
AP Honor Roll - Gold Certificate
We are proud to share that Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park High has earned Gold recognition on the AP® School Honor Roll!
This recognition reflects our school’s strong commitment to expanding access to rigorous coursework and supporting student success in Advanced Placement programs.
It is a direct result of the dedication, collaboration, and hard work of our teachers, counselors, and staff who continuously encourage students to challenge themselves and strive for excellence.
We celebrate this achievement together and look forward to building on this success in the months ahead.
Connecting Science, Careers, and Clean Water in Biology Class
Melvin Laureano, Bilingual Public Affairs Specialist of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) visited the biology students. This visit was a part of the community outreach and careers component of our Project Based Learning Project called Chicago Plasti-CITY where students explore ways in which microplastics and other plastic based chemical waste are removed from our waterways.
The amazing Biology and Physical Sciences students were locked in and engaged as they collected data on the biological, environmental, and even legal aspects of reclaiming our cities and surrounding committees' water. They presented our visitor with challenging questions that they preplanned. Safe drinking water and its relationship to microplastic contamination leaves much for your future young engineers to address. Many career opportunities were presented to our scholars as well making this visit very beneficial to our students' view of the future.
Alumni Panel Prepares Seniors for Life After Graduation
On January 9, our school welcomed back several alumni for a special Alumni Panel designed to help prepare seniors for life after graduation. The panel gave students the opportunity to hear firsthand about the experiences, challenges, and successes our alumni encountered after leaving high school.
During the event, seniors were able to ask questions and gain valuable insight about college, careers, and other post-graduation paths. The alumni shared honest advice, lessons they have learned, and tips for navigating life beyond high school, making the discussion both informative and inspiring.
This panel was a meaningful experience that helped seniors feel more confident and prepared as they begin planning for their future. We are grateful to our alumni for returning to share their stories and support the next generation of graduates.

A Message from Nayeli Rivera
Hi! My name is Nayeli Rivera, and I’m a senior at HSA, a place that has truly become my second home. I’ve been part of the HSA community for 11 years, and during that time, I’ve grown in ways I never imagined—academically, personally, and emotionally. Being involved in softball, being team manager for basketball, and being part of the ambassador team has helped me step out of my comfort zone, build confidence and leadership skills, and form meaningful relationships that I’ll always carry with me.
One of the things I enjoy most about HSA is the supportive environment. The teachers truly care about students’ success, and the community feels like a family. HSA has pushed me to challenge myself and try new things.
Moving into the new building has been truly special. It feels like a new beginning at the same time as a meaningful goodbye. Being able to complete my final year in a new space has made this chapter of my life even more memorable.
Overall, HSA has played a huge role in shaping who I am today, and I’m grateful for the experiences, friendships, and lessons I’ll carry with me beyond graduation.
Staff Spotlight
Mr. Phillips
Hi! I am Mr. Phillips! I am the Director of Bands here at HSA McKinley Park. I teach Band (Wind Ensemble and Beginning Band), Modern Band, and Music Production. I have one of the best jobs in the world! I get to be excited about music all day long! Seeing my students' effort truly inspires me every day. Playing an instrument is NOT easy. It takes years of practice before you really start sounding good, and it's scary to perform in front of others- especially your peers. Our music students take these risks every day. Seeing our students light up as they finally get a hard passage right or high fives when the band absolutely nails something will never get old. Music is one of the greatest joys in my life, and I am so thankful to be able to share that with students day in and day out.

FRC ROBOTICS
Ready, Set, Robot! FRC Team Kicks Off 2026 Season
Get ready for the roar of motors and the thrill of innovation! Our school’s award-winning FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team is officially launching its 2026 season this Saturday, January 10th, at the city-wide FRC "Rebuilt" Kickoff Event.
This exciting annual tradition marks the moment when hundreds of teams worldwide—including ours—receive the brand-new game challenge and their kits of parts. From that moment, our dedicated students and mentors have just six intense weeks to design, build, program, and test a competitive robot.
Sync to Succeed
Following the Kickoff, the team dove straight into strategy with a crucial Teamsync meeting. In this collaborative session, students and mentors huddled together to analyze the newly released game manual, breaking down complex rules, discussing scoring strategies, and brainstorming initial robot design concepts. This focused discussion ensures the entire team is aligned and ready to tackle the engineering challenge ahead.
The Workshop is Buzzing
With the game strategy defined, our workshop has transformed into a hive of focused activity. Students are now deep in the fabrication phase, translating their initial concepts into reality. Armed with tools and teamwork, they meticulously assemble custom mechanisms, carefully fitting each component that will be crucial for the robot's performance. This is the critical stage where complex designs meet hands-on engineering.
Stay tuned for more updates, and join us in cheering them on!
VEX ROBOTICS
This month, the MechaHawks have been working on building the skeleton of their VEX V5 Challenge robot, DEX. Students are learning how to assemble the frame, plan the structure, and think about how different parts will fit together. They are also practicing coding and problem-solving skills in preparation for future robot functions.
Through this process, students are exploring new ideas, testing small components, and supporting each other as they work step by step. The team is focused on learning and making steady progress as they prepare for the next stages of the project.
Concept Young Scholars Program
An Opportunity of a Lifetime
Mr. Hernandez has launched a fundraising campaign for the students in his CYSP group to support their 7-day educational trip to Spain in Summer 2026. For many students, this will be their first time on a plane, leaving Chicago, and experiencing life beyond their neighborhoods.
CYSP helps students grow academically, socially, and personally through leadership, community service, and educational adventures. This trip offers hands-on learning in Spanish culture, history, language, and traditions, broadening perspectives, building independence, and creating lasting memories.
Your support helps open the world to our young scholars. Please consider donating or sharing their campaign.

Alumni Corner
Michael Zamudio
Meet Michael Zamudio, a proud graduate of HSA McKinley, whose path proves that big goals can start in small classrooms.
Michael continued his education at DePaul University, where he earned a BS in Accounting with a concentration in Internal Audit, followed by a Master’s in Taxation. A self-described “double Demon,” he built a strong academic foundation while preparing for the realities of a demanding profession.
In January 2026, Michael began his career as a Tax Associate in the Real Estate Practice at PwC. His role places him at the intersection of technical tax knowledge and real-world business strategy an area that perfectly aligns with his interest in complexity and continuous learning.
Before joining PwC, Michael gained valuable experience as an Audit Intern at EY, where he developed a deeper understanding of client service, teamwork, and professional standards within a large corporate environment.
One of Michael’s greatest strengths is resilience. Growing up in a small school and community and later attending a mid-sized university prepared him well, but nothing quite compares to transitioning into a corporate environment where training cohorts can include 700+ professionals. Embracing that shift has been a defining part of his growth, reinforcing his adaptability and confidence.
Michael was drawn to accounting and tax for its ever changing nature. The work is complex, interactive, and constantly evolving requiring professionals to learn, adapt, and think critically year after year. That challenge is exactly what keeps him engaged.
Outside of work, Michael enjoys traveling and trying new experiences, always looking for ways to explore, learn, and grow both personally and professionally.
From a small school community to the global stage of the Big 4, Michael’s journey is a reminder that where you start doesn’t limit where you can go.
As Michael begins this next chapter of his career, he is thrilled to officially start his professional journey and excited to see where it will take him. Joining the Big 4 represents more than a milestone it’s the start of a path filled with learning, challenge, and opportunity.
Michael approaches this stage with curiosity and purpose, knowing that success isn’t about having everything figured out from day one, but about showing up ready to learn, adapt, and grow. He looks forward to sharpening his technical skills, building meaningful professional relationships, and continuing to evolve in a field that never stands still.
His journey serves as a reminder to current students and young professionals that no starting point is too small, and no goal is out of reach with resilience, consistency, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. What matters most is staying open to growth and trusting the process because the path forward often leads to places you never imagined.
Testing Updates
P/ACT Mock Test
We are excited to announce that our next P/ACT Mock Test will take place on Wednesday, February 25.
This full-length practice exam will provide students with an authentic Enhanced ACT testing experience and serve as an excellent opportunity to prepare for the Spring ACT test.
The mock test will follow Enhanced ACT testing procedures, helping students build stamina, improve time management, and gain confidence ahead of the official exam.
Additional details regarding the schedule, testing locations, and supervision will be shared closer to the testing date.
ACCESS Testing for ML Students Underway
Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park has begun the ACCESS test, a valuable service designed to assess the English language proficiency of our Multilingual Learners (ML) students.
The test officially started on January 27th and is planned to continue through mid-February.
The ACCESS test evaluates students across four key sections: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. These sections provide a comprehensive understanding of each student’s language skills, helping teachers tailor instruction to better support their learning and growth.
We appreciate the cooperation of our students, teachers, and families as we complete this important assessment. The results will help guide instructional decisions and ensure our ML students receive the support they need to succeed academically.
