January 16 FAFSA Night: Complete your student's application with an expert
If you are a parent of a senior, you will not want to miss Davison High School's annual FAFSA Night scheduled for Thursday, January 16.
Follow along as an expert leads you step-by-step in completing your student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
The FAFSA is required for students to be eligible for federal grants, loans and work study. It’s also a requirement to be eligible for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, which provides up to $27,500 over five years to attend a public university or private college in the state. If a student wants to be considered for tuition-free community college through a state program, they must also fill out the FAFSA.
District honors A+B=C students at December luncheon
Eleven students were honored at the winter awards luncheon to celebrate students selected to receive the A+B=C award.
The ABC award program began under the auspices of the Davison Kiwanis Club in December 1999. Unfortunately, last year the Club was no longer able to support this program due to a decline in membership. However, because this program was so important, the district has continued the tradition begun by the Kiwanis.
The A+B=C award is not intended as an academic award. Rather, it recognizes kids who show up to class every day, work to their full potential and serve as positive role models to their peers.
The award was developed to honor the “good kid” in the classroom, one who has:
“A” - a positive ATTITUDE and mindset in the way he or she handles life’s everyday situations.
“B” - BASIC values of honesty, respect for persons and property, truthfulness, sensitivity to others, hard work and unselfishness.
“C” - CHARACTER that exemplifies his or her moral and ethical strength.
"It’s crucial to acknowledge those who consistently do the right thing," said Superintendent Matt Lobban. "Unfortunately, we don’t do this as often as we should. Negativity dominates social media, television, music, daily conversations and even broader societal narratives. But we can push back—not by engaging in the same negativity, but by choosing a different path.
"Life is full of choices—thousands every single day, in fact. When we choose to respond differently to the challenges around us, we set ourselves apart. This creates an opportunity to show the world a better way to build community. That’s exactly what this award celebrates: students who, day after day, make choices that prioritize others, who respond to injustice with kindness and integrity, who choose love over hate, and who stand up for what’s right, even when it’s not the easiest or the most popular option."
Congratulations to the Winter 2024 recipients:
Miller Bentley
5th grade
Miller was nominated by Dean of Students Mrs. Amy Renye, who wrote: "Miller consistently demonstrates a positive attitude every day. He enters the building with a smile, always greeting both adults and students he encounters. His optimistic outlook is clear to everyone, as he can often be heard encouraging those around him. Miller has a natural ability to find the good in every situation, often reassuring others with a simple, "It's okay," and offering positive solutions. Miller is a dedicated student who consistently upholds the Cardinal Code. He demonstrates integrity and can always be relied on to make the right choices. Whether in the classroom or beyond, he gives his best effort in all he does. For Miller, helping others feel good about themselves is a top priority. He is quiet about it and does not command recognition for all the good things that he does. When you acknowledge him he will often just smile and nod because for him, it is natural and just part of who he is. Miller exemplifies what it means to be a model student. He is kind to everyone and goes out of his way to ensure that others feel included and valued. On the playground, he encourages students to join in group sports, even if they aren’t the most athletic. He embraces everyone for who they are and makes an effort to highlight their participation and effort."
Isla Doyle
6th Grade
Isla was nominated by Bus Driver Shannon DeSonia who wrote: "Isla is always smiling and cheerful when on the bus. She is always inclusive by having conversations with anyone around her, bringing a positive environment to the bus. Isla is very caring and inclusive to all students around her. She will speak to anyone. She is always willing to help when a sub is on the bus. Isla will pick up any trash she may see around the bus to help keep it clean, and if someone is doing something they should not on the bus she will very respectfully inform me so I am aware of what is happening. Isla is a very well-behaved and well-mannered student. I have never had to speak with her in regards to how to act on a bus. She knows what is expected of her and she does it. She will also make sure those around her are showing the same behaviors. Isla is also punctual. She has never once been late to the bus at school or in the mornings. She will also let me know if she is not going to be on for some reason. Isla is very responsible."
Gavin Weaver
Sixth Grade
Gavin was nominated by Teacher Mrs. Gabrielle Hartley, who says: "Gavin has shown a remarkable positive mindset throughout this school year, always willing to lend a helping hand to his classmates without hesitation. His enthusiasm for learning is evident, as he often completes math assignments quickly and demonstrates a strong eagerness to explore more challenging concepts. No matter what life throws at him, he accepts the challenge and continues to move forward. One of his most admirable traits is being unselfish and patient. He is often the go-to person for support among his peers, readily stepping up to lead by example. His ability to encourage others with positive affirmations and guide them step by step demonstrates his genuine desire for everyone to succeed. Gavin is such a positive kid who brings joy to the classroom every day. His warm greetings and radiant smile uplift both his teachers and peers, creating a welcoming environment. He demonstrates a strong work ethic and often goes above and beyond in his assignments, all while showcasing his personality through his love for band class and playing the trombone, as well as his playful humor with classmates. Additionally, he takes great pride in representing his peers on the Hahn Student Council Committee."
Reghan Jones
8th Grade
Reghan was nominated by Davison Middle School Teacher Miss Michelle Wilson, who says: "Reghan has a lot of interests and is very busy. Even if she is tired, her participation in class is consistent, she works hard, and never complains. She practices at home to prepare for extra opportunities. Reghan is a LINK in choir class this year. She is so understanding and mature when it comes to helping her student ... Reghan shows leadership strengths in choir by stepping up to use her gifts and abilities and help other students. This fall we have been working on a dance, and Reghan is talented in this area. She helped the choir form dance groups, and modeled specific moves in order to help them learn. She was humble and helpful as she did this, and other students did not feel judged but instead grew in confidence and the whole team performed better!"
Juliana Martinez
7th Grade
Juliana was nominated by GSRP teacher Ms. Heidi Alcodray, who says: "Juliana is a well-rounded girl. She is always respectful and wants to help. I coached her a few years ago and she always came to practice with such a great attitude and was very coachable. She always listened and tried her very best. At the end of the season, her teammates named her MVP because she was such a good role model for them to follow. Juliana comes to my classroom several times a month and sometimes every day of the week to help with the preschoolers. She has done this for two years and is so helpful. She volunteers her own time and the preschoolers are so excited when she comes in. She assists them with snack by opening packages or drinks. She also offers support if a student needs some extra support during activities or read-alouds. Overall you can tell that Juliana has high morals and is a good friend to her peers. My daughter participated in the Miss Davison pageant this last summer and Juliana came to the pageant to show her support. She is always kind and a team player."
Payton Moore
8th Grade
Payton was nominated by teacher Mrs. Crystal Weekley, who said: "Payton is a shining star in any room she enters; her bright and bubbly personality allows others to find comfort and caring in her approachable demeanor. Payton readily demonstrates optimism and open-mindedness, as well as integrity, as she navigates life's situations - big or small. Payton was an exceptionally talented student in 7th Honors Science last year, and often returns to visit her old 7th grade science classroom to offer Mrs. Weekley assistance at the end of each school day. Her hard work throughout 7th grade science made her a top contender for "Best Student of Science" and Student of the Month Nominee. Payton's continuing extension of help and assistance to current 7th grade Honors Science classrooms provides evidence for engaging others in safe science practices, as well as promotes trustworthy involvement of peer-to-peer interactions in participating as a teacher's assistant for training students in GREEN Water Testing. Payton is always courteous and respectful, offering help beyond expectations and providing care and consideration toward others. In essence of basic values, Payton is an exemplary student who readily demonstrates the CARDS Code each day, making her teachers and school proud! Payton's attention to detail, kind attitude, and exceptional employment of basic values embodies her strong character. Her talent in academics is profoundly appreciated and her ability to offer an optimistic outlook with kindness demonstrates her strength in qualities that distinguish persons of moral and ethical strength. Payton is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, or stay curious about the way the world works. Her encouragement towards others in working in group settings ensures that no student gets left behind while equally promoting the inclusion of her peers and associates. Payton is a shining star with strong character, grit, and perseverance to achieve the goals she sets out to accomplish; lighting the pathway for others to learn to take charge of their full potential."
Cruz Anselmo
10th Grade
Cruz was nominated by Davison High School Teacher Mrs. Lindsay Gokey, who wrote: "Cruz comes to class every day ready to do his best and with the best attitude. I have a mix of grade levels in each of my Spanish 2 classes. The students are often nervous because they don't know everyone but Cruz is willing to work with any student in the class. He is always kind and helpful to ALL of his classmates. After noticing how well Cruz works with his classmates Mrs. Gokey started asking him to do student tours for new students transferring to DHS for the first time. She asked him to show them to their classes, where the cafeteria is and get them all set up with a school-issued Chromebook before they go to their first class. This interaction with these new students helps to put them at ease on their first day here at a new school. The way Cruz interacts with the new students is what sets him apart from other students. After a tour he will return to class and tell Mrs. Gokey all that he learned about the new student. He is so personable and has conversations with the students while he walks them around."
Abbianna Nakoneczny
12th grade
Abbianna was nominated by Mrs. Barbara Peckins-Muszynski, Assistant and Facility Use Coordinator at Davison Community Enrichment and Recreation. Mrs. Peckins-Muszynski said: "I have worked With Abbianna for the past five years in the Davison Actors Playhouse. She has not only grown as an actor but what an amazing young woman she has become. Abbie Is truly a leader to her younger team/cast mates. She comes to practice every day with a super positive attitude and energy that is infectious. Any time I need someone to perform for a community event or even help set up for an event she is the first to volunteer. Abbie may not realize the impact she has had on so many children in our district. From tutoring to simply modeling her true character, she is a hard worker - one of the first to be off script every show - is mothering/loving, caring for a scared or sick kiddo in the cast, respectful (helps direct while taking direction from her superiors and never overstepping her boundaries). I see this girl making a huge impact on our world someday. I know she has made a huge impact on our theater group. This year Abbie took on the role of helping a couple of our students by tutoring them while at practice. She worked diligently to get them test-ready and I watched as the students' confidence grew. This girl amazes me. Abbianna works as many hours as allowed at McDonalds, just received her medical assistant license through her classes at the high school, maintains great grades, tutors, performs large roles in all our musicals and puts in many hours of community service through us. For example, this past year I became very ill and was unable to direct for almost a month during our production of Beauty and the Beast. Abbie came to my house and got notes for the scene and stepped in to help direct while I was gone. Not many people her age could master this and, frankly, not many would take the time to do it. When I returned I was weak and she did a lot of my leg work for me. The children in our program look up to her and she is an amazing role model."
Corbin Thomas
12th Grade
Corbin was nominated by Davison High School Social Worker Ms. Emily Judd, who wrote: "Corbin has a big heart. He truly cares for others and has a concern for the safety, happiness and wellbeing of others. He is a good friend. Corbin works hard and doesn't shy away from challenging work ... he provides positive and meaningful contributions to classroom discussions. He consistently gives great effort in his work. Life is better having him in the classroom. As a dedicated member of the Bird House Coffee Cart, Corbin takes pride in his role of making and delivering coffee to staff members. His courteous demeanor and positive attitude brighten the day for everyone he interacts with. Corbin is honest and trustworthy; truly a young man of integrity. He has a well-tuned moral compass. He consistently gives great effort in his work. Corbin's exemplary behavior and commitment to fostering a supportive and friendly environment make him a deserving candidate for this award. His actions inspire those around him and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive community."
Aerionna Myers
9th Grade
Aerionna was nominated for the ABC award by Davison Alternative Education Teacher Mrs. Michelle Ziimmerman who said: "Aerionna is cheerful and unselfishly works alongside and with others on projects with anyone. She takes these partnerships seriously and has never complained about other people. She is a role model who is not talkative or noisy. She never calls her classmates out, but I notice her quiet "I get it smile" if others are redirected. Aerionna is truly the definition of a conscientious student, wishing to do what is right, especially to do one's work or duty well and thoroughly. She is organized and always does her best when completing assignments. She is respectful of classroom rules even when nobody is looking. Aerionna is reliable, self-disciplined and has excellent attendance. She has only missed Art a couple of times since the beginning of the year and is responsible enough to make up the work."
Ava McAboy
12th grade
Ava was nominated for the ABC award by Davison Alternative Education Secretary Mrs. Robin Ostrander, who wrote: "Ava is a shining example of kindness, responsibility and dedication. As a student, she goes above and beyond by not only excelling in her own work but also by offering support to the office staff and contributing to the overall atmosphere of the school. Every morning, Ava greets the office staff with a warm “hello” and a bright smile, creating an uplifting start to the day for everyone in the office. Her friendly, respectful attitude sets a positive tone and fosters a welcoming environment for all. Ava is also always ready to lend a hand, whether it’s helping to decorate the hallways for the holidays or assisting with other tasks around the school. Her willingness to pitch in, has made her a beloved member of the school community. With impeccable manners and a consistently pleasant demeanor, Ava is someone who brings joy to those around her. The enthusiasm for helping others and making the school a better place is a true testament to her character and commitment to creating a positive, collaborative atmosphere. We are lucky to have Ava as part of our school community!"
