Restorative Practices
The Hartford School District is committed to implementing restorative practices to better align with our values. We begin this year by focusing on the Circle - a simple structured process of communication that helps build and maintain a healthy community in which all members feel connected and respected. Restorative Practices believes that relationships are fundamental; so that when harm is done, there is a relationship to repair.
Elijah Hawkes
Elijah Hawkes, Director of School Leadership Programs at Upper Valley Educator Institute, Associate Professor at St. Michael's College, author, and former public school teacher and principal for over 20 years, is working with the Hartford Memorial Middle School and Hartford High School to implement Phase 1 of Restorative Practices through Advisory Circles.
Circle Forward
The Center for Restorative Justice at Suffolk University will be training many members of our HSD staff around the use of Advisory circles in building relationships and creating connections. The text "Circle Forward" is a guide for teachers and administrators to incorporate the practice of Circle into the everyday life of the school community.
Education Justice Coalition's VT Educators of Color Retreat
Three HSD educators of color attended a retreat at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee in October, hosted by the Education Justice Coalition. The HSD is a VT Educator of Color Affiliate which aims to sustain and retain Educators of Color in Vermont. The retreat provided opportunity for community, connection, and respite.
HACTC Students at the Women Can Do! Conference
26 HACTC students attended the Women Can Do Conference at Vermont State University’s Randolph Campus. Women Can Do is a one-day trades and STEM career exploration conference for high school girls and gender expansive students.
Level 2 HACTC students exhibited at the event: they taught others how to weld, properly start a chainsaw and wear proper PPE, use a paint sprayer to spray a fender, design a kitchen using a scale ruler, wire an outlet, and use a tile saw.
HACTC students were also participants in hands-on learning opportunities ranging from heavy equipment operation, tree climbing, an airplane flying simulation, intubation, IV setting, operating a lifelike robot dog, hand saws, deer carcass assessment, and more!
