Dear Rose City Park Families,

Over the past few weeks, we have seen a decrease in attendance due to seasonal illness. Just like our students, teachers and staff sometimes get sick and need to be out of the building. When that happens, learning does not pause. When a teacher knows they will be out, they submit a substitute request online through the district system, and available substitutes review and pick up the job to ensure classrooms remain covered. When you hear that your child’s teacher is out for the day, you can be confident that there is a clear system in place at Portland Public Schools. Qualified substitutes step in to continue instruction, student learning remains the top priority, and safety and supervision are consistently maintained. Substitutes go through a structured hiring and onboarding process managed by the PPS Human Resources Substitute Office to ensure quality and readiness. Our substitutes are a valued part of the PPS team, and we are grateful for the important role they play in supporting Portland’s greatest asset, our students. If you have questions about substitute procedures, please contact PPS or our main office.

Speaking of illness and the important systems we have in place to care for students, we would like to highlight someone who plays a key role in supporting student health every single day. Our Staff Spotlight this week is Ms. Hill, our dedicated Health Assistant. When students are not feeling well or experience an injury at school, Ms. Hill is the caring and knowledgeable professional they go to for support. She helps assess illnesses, provides basic first aid, communicates with families when needed, and ensures students are safe and cared for throughout the day. Just as we work to maintain continuity of learning when teachers are out, Ms. Hill works tirelessly to maintain the health and well being of our school community. We are grateful for her calm presence, professionalism, and commitment to keeping our students healthy and ready to learn.

Staff Spotlight: Jeanine Hill - Student Health Assistant

Q: What’s your role at RCP?

A: I am the School Health Aid. Which means I work under a registered nurse when she is not able to be here. But I view my job as being the school mom. I take care of all the students and adults in the building. I work to ensure any and all injuries at school are properly cared for and addressed. I dispense daily medications for those students that need them. And, I help students understand how their bodies work and function. I strive to make the health room a safe, friendly place to come when a child gets hurt or is upset.

Q: How long have you worked at RCP?

A: I have worked at RCP for 8 years. I started working in this building when it was ACCESS Academy, the year before.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: I have lived in the PNW for over 30 years. I currently live in Battle Ground WA, with my husband and oldest daughter. My other daughter lives in Seattle with her partner. We have 2 big dogs, and 2 cats. There is always something interesting or crazy happening in our yard and neighborhood. One day I was gardening and our neighbor's steer got out and was wandering around my yard. Or, the other day another neighbor’s pigs snuck out and were hanging out munching on our grass.

Outside of school, I enjoy… I enjoy gardening and doing crafts in my spare time. I am always on the hunt for interesting projects to bring to my SUN classes.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust as we work to keep our students safe, healthy, and learning every day.

Schoolyard Depaving/Naturescaping Project Schoolyard Depaving/Naturescaping Project

We are still moving ahead with Phase One of our schoolyard depaving/naturescaping project, which will remove 6,000 square feet of blacktop on the north end of the schoolyard. Our Community Depave Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026! As part of the project, RCP students will learn about stormwater and watershed health, and get a chance to help with planting trees and native plants. We could not be more excited for this first, grant-funded project working toward our Schoolyard Vision. Special thanks to City of Portland's Percent for Green grants, our project lead Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, and project partners DePave and Juncus Studio!

Key dates:

+ Construction renderings shared with community: May 2026

+ Community Depave Day: October 3, 2026

+ Tree planting day: November 2026

+ Construction complete: December 2026

New RCP Sweatshirts!

It's finally here! RCP sweatshirts! We kept the classic otter logo in our signature purple and light grey zip-up hoodie sweatshirt. But there's a new color and new design! Thanks to a very talented RCP parent (Britt Appleton), who sketched this cute otter. It's printed on a navy blue hooded pullover sweatshirt.

All sweatshirts are available in adult and youth sizes. Quantities are limited!
