As we think about the exciting and successful start of the 2023-2024 school year, we will spend some fun, engaging, and productive time together when everyone returns to discuss and plan for ways to continually and effectively partner with students, families, colleagues, and the community for the benefit of student success. Every school in Kansas will be thinking about and determining ways to approach, develop, and grow in each of the areas below. We are looking forward to your return to begin this important work together:

  • Safety and Security: Our number one priority each and every day is that students, staff, and visitors are safe at school. We will continue to use our existing procedures, and we will continuously review and modify as necessary any of our procedures, protocols, and practices to ensure that we maximize school safety and security.
  • Social and Emotional Supports: We know that establishing and continuing to strengthen our trusting relationships with students and families is a critical and foundational step to helping our students learn. We will continue to be mindful of and act upon the social and emotional needs of students, staff, and families.
  • Attendance and Engagement: We will continue to be committed to working closely with students and families, and we want our schools to continue to be places where students and staff have fun, thrive, and look forward to teaching and learning each day.
  • Communication with Families: We enjoy sharing our successes with families, and we want to hear from them as well regarding their thoughts about successes and challenges. You will receive more information about Bloomz, the communication tool we use to effectively communicate with you, as well as information on how to subscribe to our new district and building wide newsletters!
  • Curriculum and Instruction: We will continue to plan fun and exciting instruction for each subject area using Kansas Standards. Working together, we can absolutely minimize and/or eliminate any learning loss that may be impacting our students.
  • Evaluation of Learning: We will continue to gather reasonable amounts of data and information about our students through observations, questioning techniques, and discussions, along with more formal assessments or tests. When we collaborate to analyze this data, we know it will continue to tell us what students know and are able to do as well as how much students are growing and achieving.

I look forward to working with you this school year to help your child be successful!

Amy Young

Amy will be one of our 1st grade teachers this year! She comes to us from the Blue Valley-Randolph school district where she served as a special education teacher for nine years. She has been in education for ten years. Amy and her husband James, will celebrate their 31st anniversary in September and have four adult children. Their youngest (twins) just graduated high school in 2022, their middle child graduated during Covid, and their oldest will be getting married in October. Amy went back to school with four young children after realizing she did not want to give up on her dream of being an elementary and special education teacher. Her passion is teaching young children and she knew if she ever transitioned away from special education it would be to teach kindergarten or first grade. Amy shares, " I am beyond excited and blessed to be teaching first grade this year and starting this new venture as a Valley Heights Mustang!"

Welcome Amy!

Amy Spoonts

Amy Spoonts will be the Waterville Elementary special education teacher. Amy grew up in Beattie where she attended PreK-6th grade and then attended junior high and high school in Marysville. After graduating, she attended Bethany College where she got a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. Amy played tennis while attending Bethany and that's where she met her husband, Sean.

They have 3 kids: Garrison will be a sophomore at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth where he also plays baseball, Carson will be a senior and enjoys being involved in football, basketball, and track along with lots of other school activities, and Teagan will be an 8th grader and is excited to participate in volleyball, basketball, and track as well as other activities.

Amy just completed 24 years of teaching and has spent most of that time in the regular education classroom (17 years at the 4th/5th grade level and 7 years in PreK). She's taught in a variety of places including Marion, Onaga, Russell, and Eureka. In each of those places her family has enjoyed being very involved with school activities as well as activities in the community. "Our schedule is typically very busy, but that's our "normal!" As if having 3 kids at different levels, new jobs, and a new community wasn't enough, I'm also going to help coach high school volleyball this coming year. I'm excited for all of these opportunities!" Amy shared.

In her spare time, Amy enjoys spending time outside with her family, cooking/baking, experimenting with new designs on her Cricut machine, walking, going to thrift stores and garage sales, playing games, and enjoying nature. "I'm also a Seint Beauty artist. Lastly, I love all things with polka dots and cows!"

Welcome Amy!

Summer 2023

What a summer it's been!

We've had so much fun this summer at Camp Exploration, and we want to thank you for making

it possible. Without your support, our summer camp would not have been such a success—and

we can't wait to do it again next year.

Our summer camp was all about rockets, RC cars, Flying classrooms, Christmas in July,

teamwork, and FUN—but even more than that, it was about friendship and giving back.

Watching the students and staff grow together in understanding each other made us so proud.

We love seeing how much they've grown over the last couple of months. Check out a few of the

images we captured from the summer below!

As we get ready to get back to school we’d like to remind everyone that Colt's Round-Up starts

in September, and our fitness and gymnastics Community Ed classes will be starting up again

soon! You can sign up for these classes online by clicking the Community Ed link and going to

the forms and registration page at valleyheights.org or emailing Tony Yungeberg at

tyungeberg@valleyheights.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

Transportation Transportation

Welcome Back To School!

As we kick off another exciting school year, we want to take a moment to highlight the

importance of school bus safety and our commitment to providing a positive experience for your

student(s).

Safety is our top priority. Our buses are regularly maintained and inspected to ensure they meet

the highest safety standards. Our drivers undergo rigorous training and hold the necessary

certifications to operate the vehicles responsibly.

To ensure a safe journey, we have implemented strict rules on our buses. These rules are

designed to promote good behavior, maintain order, and create a respectful environment for all

passengers. We kindly request your support in reinforcing these rules with your student(s) so

that everyone can enjoy their commute.

Our drivers strive to be both kind and professional. They understand that their role extends

beyond transportation; they are trusted caretakers responsible for ensuring your student(s)

well-being while on board.

Punctuality is crucial, and we make every effort to adhere to the scheduled pick-up and drop-off

times. However, unforeseen circumstances such as roadwork/traffic or weather conditions may

occasionally cause delays. Rest assured that we will communicate any significant delays

promptly through our established communication channels. This school year we will be affected

by the replacement of the bridge over Fawn Creek between Blue Rapids and Waterville on US

77. Traffic will be monitored by a stop light and reduced to one lane. At this time we will maintain

our past leave times in the mornings of 7:35 am. Please have your student(s) at the bus stop on

time to ensure that we run on schedule.

As we embark on this new academic year together, let's work hand in hand toward creating a

positive experience for all students. We believe that by fostering good behavior, encouraging

kindness, and maintaining open lines of communication with parents and families, we can make

this year one of the best yet!

If you have any questions or require further information about our school bus services, please

feel free to contact us at 785-363-2211 or tyungeberg@valleyheights.org.

Wishing you all a fantastic year ahead!

Sincerely,

Tony Yungeberg
