Freshmen Focus
We had an outstanding time hosting our future 9th grade students at our Freshmen Focus event this week. The students spent the entire morning on campus with us to learn about the different CTE and elective classes that we offer. Then we hosted the parents for our Freshmen Focus Parent Night as well. Students and parents were able to learn about high school graduation requirements, course offerings at BRHS, and some of our electives.
If you weren't able to attend or still have questions, we encourage you to call or email the BRHS Counselor, Brooke Ingersoll, at brooke.ingersoll@brisd.net. She will be meeting with all 8th-11th grade students in their English classes over the next few weeks.
National School Counseling Week 2024 will be celebrated from Feb. 5–9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
We are very grateful for our counselor, Brooke Ingersoll, because she is a vital part of the educational process for all students. She works with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options, and social/emotional skills. Her impact on students can help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Mrs. Ingersoll is integral to student success at BRHS.
Capturing Kids' Hearts February Focus: Kindness
As you probably know, BRISD is a Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH) school district. As a part of our efforts to help our students learn about and exhibit certain character traits, we will be focusing on a specific trait each month. We will also be sharing a newsletter with you so that you will know what your student is learning about.
This month we are challenging your student to be kind to others, even when it’s hard. We are partnering with you to help your child grow in kindness. Most children learn new behaviors by copying those around them; we have a powerful opportunity and responsibility to teach kindness by example. This month, model kindness and empower your children to show compassion to those around them with these activities.

Nurse's Notes
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Dating abuse is a pattern of coercive, physically violent, intimidating, or manipulative behaviors used to exert power and control over a partner. While we define dating violence as a pattern, that doesn’t mean the first instance of abuse isn’t also dating violence; we simply recognize that dating violence tends to involve a series of abusive behaviors over a course of time.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between a healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationship. While there are many warning signs of abuse, here are ten of the most common to look for:
- Checking your cell phone or email without permission.
- Constant put-downs.
- Extreme jealousy or insecurity.
- Explosive temper.
- Isolating you from family or friends.
- Making false accusations.
- Mood swings.
- Physically hurting you in any way.
- Possessiveness.
- Telling you what to do.
It's important to remember that no two relationships are the same and these behaviors occur across what we call the "Relationship Spectrum." If you or someone you know sees the warning signs in their relationship, help is available.

Staff/Faculty Highlight: Eddy Medina
Eddy Medina, a student enrollment specialist at the Farmersville Campus, started working at Collin College as a student assistant in 2017 while pursuing his Associate of Arts degree. He later began working as a program assistant for Continuing Education from 2019-2021 and has been in his role since March 2021.
Medina has worked in higher education since 2017. He worked as a graphic/web designer in the printing industry for about 20 years prior to Collin. He then went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical-Theological Studies and obtained a Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology from Liberty University, all while employed at Collin.
Why do you love your job?
