Renowned Author and Speaker Erika Gilchrist Inspires Proviso West Students with Message of Empowerment and Resilience

HILLSIDE, Ill. – A select group of young women at Proviso West High School had the opportunity to hear from Erika Gilchrist, a renowned author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, during an empowering session on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. Gilchrist, known for her dynamic and candid storytelling, shared personal insights about perseverance, leadership and self-worth that resonated deeply with students.

Gilchrist’s discussion centered on empowerment, resilience and leadership, drawing from her own life experiences. Gilchrist overcame extraordinary hardships to become one of the most captivating voices in women’s empowerment today.

During her visit, Gilchrist engaged students through several interactive exercises that highlighted how much they share in common. One activity revealed that despite surface differences, the young women had faced similar struggles reminding them of the importance of unity, empathy and encouragement.

“The message I want them to take away,” Gilchrist said, “is that everything is figure-outable. All is not lost. There is a solution for everything if they really look for it and understand that they’re capable of implementing the solution—even if they have to do it scared or nervous.”

Students were visibly moved by Gilchrist’s words, responding with applause, cheers and quiet moments of reflection. Many shared personal takeaways after the presentation.

“I learned that simple issues are not really as bad as we make them, and us as students all have a lot more in common than we realize,” said Proviso West sophomore Amaya R. “And most importantly, never give up!”

When reflecting on speaking to Chicago-area students, Gilchrist said she feels a personal connection to them and recognizes the impact of representation.

“I appreciate seeing these students who look like me because I believe they also appreciate seeing a guest speaker who looks like them,” she said. “I think my words strike them differently when they are able to see themselves. I did not have that when I was their age, and I know the significance of seeing people who look like you empower you. It makes the difference.”

Proviso West Principal Jeremy Christian said inviting speakers like Gilchrist helps students recognize their strength and potential.

“It’s important for them to build themselves up and know they are not only the greatest students in the world but the greatest female students in the world,” Christian said. “When they hear from someone like Erika, who has turned pain into purpose, it reinforces that they, too, can rise above challenges, support one another, and thrive fearlessly.”

Gilchrist is the creator of the bold and inspiring brand W.T.F. – Women Thriving Fearlessly!™, and the founder of the Women Thriving Fearlessly Expo, one of the largest events for women in business in the Chicagoland area. A published author of 13 books and a 20-year veteran public speaker, Gilchrist is recognized as an expert in personal development, leadership training and conflict management for women.
