As We Reflect On The Week...

Thank you, thank you, thank you parents and guardians for entrusting us with your most precious gifts; we do not take for granted the immense level of responsibility that this comes with. With that being said I would first like to acknowledge that our thoughts and beams of light go out to the families and students of Apalachee High School. School shootings have sadly become the norm. No parent sends their child off to school expecting the worst, and yet, for some, this has become their reality. I ask that you too, take a moment of silence to reflect on this, the lives lost, the lives traumatized, and hug your child(ren) even tighter. While we cannot debate the politics that drive this country's response to these heinous crimes, we can make sure that we are doing our best to be prepared and proactive. We have systems in place to respond when lockdowns are necessary. We do engage in "drills" to make sure that students know what to do in the event of a lockdown. Additionally, staff is trained as well. To that end, you too, can help us by understanding that when we take extra precautions that require you to come into the building for early pick up, or to show your ID for pick up, or when we require that you go around to the main door to enter the building, or when we close all entrances at 8:00 am with the exception of the main door, we do so for safety reasons. When you drop off your child, and it is after 7:55, the likelihood of them making it to their grade level door is slim, which means they will need to walk all the way around to the front door. So, if you are running behind and your child will not make it to the grade level door by 8am, please drop your child off at the main entrance. Additionally, please make sure that the registration department of the district has the most updated pick up information. If you have court documents such as emergency orders of protection, custody arrangements that prohibit someone from having access to your chid while they are in our care- please make sure that we have that information updated in PowerSchool. Again, safety is our number one priority and we want to be a partner with you in keeping all of the Nichols community safe.

Assessments

This past week we had some technical difficulties and had to move parts of our MAP testing. Students will still be completing MAP this Monday and Tuesday. Also, note, that Science and Social Studies teachers will be filling out the SAEBRs assessment (which is a socio-emotional screener) regarding students in the upcoming weeks. Some students will be filling out a screener as well. More information is forthcoming. This assessment does not impact grades in any way.

Crossing Volunteers Needed

Nichols is looking for volunteers to assist us with crossing students across the street at the 2 northeast and northwest end corners of the school. I have seen firsthand, as I attempt to get students safely to school, how cars speed through the intersection, do not stop for pedestrians, or are driven by people who are on their cell phones not paying attention during both arrival times and dismissal times. We need 4 volunteers (2 for each corner) between 7:40 am-8:00 am and 3:05-3:25 pm. If you are interested in volunteering, any help would be greatly appreciated. Please notify the main office.
