A Message from Dr. Kelley Gallt
December 22, 2022
Dear District 95 Families,
As our area encounters the first significant winter storm of the season, I hope you and your family are able to remain safe, healthy, and happy during this holiday season.
For many of us, this season brings an opportunity for reflection over the past year. Once again as I reflect on the year gone by, I am reminded of the many reasons I have to be grateful - and being a part of District 95 is no small part of my reason for gratitude.
Thank you to all of you who are part of this wonderful district, whether you are a parent/guardian, student, staff member, or community partner. You are all an important part of our learning community and I am continually reminded that it truly does take a village to find success in all that we do.
Best wishes for a restful break, I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the new year - as a reminder, students return on Tuesday, January 10th and staff return on Monday, January 9th.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelley Gallt
Superintendent

LZHS REACT and Ancient Oaks
The Lake Zurich High School REACT Club worked with the Ancient Oaks Foundation earlier in December to clear an oak woodland that had previously been cleared of buckthorn 4 years ago. The group removed all new buckthorn sprouts, planted 6 oak seedlings, removed some brush, and picked up several bags of garbage (photos above). Kudos and thank you to our environmentally-minded high school volunteers!
LZHS Students Supporting Middle School PLTW
This quarter two LZHS students, Michael Parsons Avelar, a junior, and Reid Atchison, a senior, supported 8th grade students with all aspects of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Automation & Robotics curriculum, from troubleshooting tech to strategizing about how to most effectively combine mechanisms. Much of their time was spent checking in with students individually and in small groups. Both Michael and Reid came nearly every day of the quarter, functioning as mentors, and stayed as long as their schedules allowed - even waking up early to arrive in time for the middle school classes.
In addition to supporting students with their robots, Michael and Reid also addressed Social Emotional Learning (SEL). For example, both mentors answered student questions about a range of issues, from staying organized in middle school to gearing up for college and career. It was clear that throughout the quarter, the mentors forged meaningful relationships with the younger students.
Congratulations and great work, Michael and Reid, for helping to develop a strong sense of community in this class!

A Day in the Class of....Mrs. Warren, Sarah Adams
In this feature article, “A Day in the Class of…”, we highlight the Superintendent as a member of a classroom for one full period. A different school and class are highlighted each month, allowing readers a view into the classroom from a new perspective!. This lesson demonstrated Dynamic and Responsive Environment, relating to the District 95 Instruction Learning Model.
This month I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Ms. Warren’s third-grade classroom. First and foremost, I was most impressed with the academic and inquiry language used in this classroom! Students consistently used words like “I noticed that” and “I wonder…” to begin collective conversations about the problems presented to us. All learners also demonstrated a strong ability to participate in respectful discourse as they solved problems in teams. When I first walked into the classroom, we were immediately engaged in center work and/or small group learning opportunities. I was able to partner with a student and learn about a really awesome tool that is new to our learners this year, Dreambox. This program is customized and based on student readiness with multiple options for choice activities designed to be play/game-based and responsive to individual needs. Once our time together ended, Ms. Warren had us all join her at the carpet area to work together on specific math skills related to numbers and powers of ten, and later in the lesson, we were able to apply these concepts to money. What a powerful and dynamic way to learn, as the lesson was greatly interactive and supported a high level of conversation and discourse while we solved problems individually, with a partner, and as a group. Following the shared learning opportunity, we then had the chance for additional practice.
As I reflect on the learning experience in Ms. Warren’s classroom, I am so proud of the students’ engagement, focus, and excitement they exhibited during all aspects of instruction. It is simply inspiring to watch the high level of effort and persistence our students showed as they attacked new learning and practice skills already taught. Huge kudos to Ms. Warren for the organized, responsive, and dynamic learning environment she creates daily for students in her classroom!
Appreciation Days
Once again this year we are highlighting appreciation days for various staff roles throughout the district. By sharing these dates with you via this newsletter and social media, we hope you will take a moment to share your appreciation with the individuals who serve our district in these roles. A card, email, post, or a simple thank you in person means so much!!
