DiscoveR10 CTE9/14/2020

Dear Leaders,

If any of you have ever been to an arcade then you have probably seen the game "Whack-a-Mole." This is the analogy I use for education right now, it is like playing a game of whack-a-mole. As soon as you get one thing under control, out pops another "mole" to deal with. Get that one under control, then out pop two more. It is a constant cycle of change and new issues at every turn. You are left to triage your list of tasks in order to get the most pressing items accomplished first. With all that you have on your list of tasks, don't forget to add in time to take care of yourself. Luckily, we have our new CTE Consultant on board and ready to help you. Renda and I have our mallets ready to help you whack down whatever moles are being thrown your way. Just let us know how we can step in and help!

She successfully authored grant applications for the TEA Grow Your Own Program for Cycle 2 and 3, the PTECH/ICIA Planning Grant, the TEA Technology Lending Grant, the Lone Star STEM grant, and the Job Education for Texas Grant from Workforce Solutions of North Central Texas. These efforts provided almost 1 million dollars in grant funding for Community ISD over the course of 2 years and allowed them to add high wage CTE Programs of Study such as Automotive, Construction, and Information Technology. Renda loves being at the Beach, reading and writing, and spending time with her HUGE family including husband Jimmy, 5 daughters, Amanda, Haley, Shelby, Darby and Riley, and son Jackson.

Automotive and Diesel Technician Secondary Instructors - Building the High School Pipeline to Careers - Collaboration with the Texas Auto Dealers Association

The Texas Auto Dealers Association is seeking to build relationships with and provide resources to secondary automotive and diesel technician instructors by:

  • Creating a map of auto dealers in the state seeking to partner with local school districts
  • Requesting the contact information and school district of all secondary automotive and diesel technician instructors:

Survey Link - Automotive and Diesel Technician Secondary Instructor Survey

  • Participating on local advisory committees

Letter from the North Texas and Texas Auto Dealers Association:

CTE Directors:

Last year, the North Texas Automobile Dealers launched our first automotive program competition at the Fort Worth Auto Show. The students utilized skills determined by the Texas TEKS, but could not have been successful without the hard work and support of educators like you. The contest paired students, from areas throughout North Texas, with dealer technicians who mentored these students while they prepared for the competition. Vehicle manufacturers joined in the effort supplying new cars, bugs for the vehicles and participated in the judging process. In the end, schools, auto programs, instructors and dealers developed relationships that are already showing great promise. Some of the students have gained employment with franchised dealers, and many have enrolled in fall post-secondary manufacturers programs.

We want to take what we learned from the competition by including more students and dealers, while increasing our engagement and support of your programs. Our goal is to be visible to your instructors and students and potentially provide opportunities for manufacturer training, shadowing, internships, and full-time employment with those dealers in your community. We want to create a pipeline of communication between TEA, CTE Administrators, instructors, dealers and manufacturers reps and resources to ensure your students have every opportunity to work with or for our dealers. Finally, we would welcome the opportunity to be involved in your program’s advisory committees and planning groups.

How we adapt to the challenge of educating our students to enter the workforce has never been more critical. Our goal is to support automotive programs and students in the communities we serve in good times and difficult times. We commit to communicating with you and others in education on a regular basis and develop partnerships and guidance to all CTE Transportation programs across the state and develop a seamless transition from education to workplace.

From all us at the North Texas Automobile Dealers, and with the support of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association, we want to wish you the best in the up-coming school year and encourage you to work with the franchised auto dealers in your area. RDA Proposal and Changes

Due to changes in monitoring structures and requirements for certain federal and state
programs, and to eliminate duplication of monitoring activities, some program areas have
been removed from the RDA report. Those include Career and Technical Education
(CTE) indicators, Title I -Part A, and Migrant. These programs continue to be monitored
through Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) reporting and requirements.
