We had a great week in first grade! First, we want to thank Zuri’s sister for being our Spanish Heritage reader this week. She read She’s Got This by Laurie Hernandez. Second, what a wonderful performance we had today by our talented students! We are so proud of them. We thank you for all you did to help make the performance a success. Third, we hope you all have a wonderful week on your fall break. Please make certain you are reading with your child each night for at least 20 minutes. They should be sitting next to you reading out loud to you. We will see everyone again on Monday, October 21.

Ms. Hartness & Ms. Vicky

This week:

  • Math- We continued our place value study for numbers up to 99. We studied that the > symbol means greater than and the < symbol means less than. We also interpreted comparison statements that use <, >, or =.

  • Reading/Phonics- We reviewed letter sounds, revisited our prior fables, and read a new fable, The Dog and the Manger. Ask your child what the moral is for this fable.

  • Writing- We reviewed the fables we read thus far and completed story maps that include: the title, characters, setting, plot (beginning, middle, end), and the moral.

  • Social Studies- We studied the five oceans in addition to the seven continents. See if your child can sing the “Five Oceans” song to you (I can’t get that tune out of my mind!)

  • After break week:

  • Math- We will continue our place value study for numbers up to 99 by comparing and ordering one- and two-digit numbers.

  • Reading/Phonics- We will review letter sounds and trick words (words that can’t be phonetically decoded). We will continue our Fable study with The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.

  • Writing- We will continue discussing and then writing the story elements from the fables using a variety of graphic organizers.

  • Social Studies- We will continue to review the seven continents, and five oceans, and begin a landform study.

Thank you for being a part of this special day! A heartfelt shoutout to all the families who crafted the beautiful letters, sea creature props, and amazing costumes. The students truly shone as they performed and enjoyed every moment of the celebration.

Wishing you a fantastic fall break filled with joy and adventure!

This week:

Reading: The students worked on combining syllables to form words, and then they created a list of these words.

Writing: The students matched words with images and organized scrambled sentences.

Family Project in Spanish Class Family Project in Spanish Class

We are excited to begin a family project (family poster) after fall break! Please send in a family picture, along with individual pictures of everyone in the family photo. Pets are welcome, too!

You don’t need to use photo paper; you can print the pictures on A4 paper. Alternatively, feel free to email the pictures to me, and I can print them at school.

Thank you!

GLOBE is excited that we have been approved by the Spanish Government to receive a grant to bring Language Support Assistants (LSA) to GLOBE. Our LSAs help provide extra support in language classes for students. For some of these teachers, it is their very first time in the US, and we want them to have as many opportunities to interact with American students and culture.

Ms. Grant

Hi, families. Ms. Diane Grant - school counselor - has resigned. Her last day was today. We will miss her tremendously and are so grateful for all she's done for our school community. Our new counselor has already been selected and has been on campus this week. He'll be formally introduced in the next schoolwide newsletter.

October 31st

We are permitting students to wear a costume to school on Thursday, October 31st with the following guidelines. The costume must not contain a mask, props, loose articles, be gory or violent in nature, or have any other aspect that could disrupt the classroom learning environment. We know, of course, that many costumes come with additional items, just please leave them at home. Costumes are optional; students may wear their uniform or spirit wear instead.
