Region 10 Social Studies Support
May 2021
Thank You Teachers!
I think it is fitting that the first week of the last month of the school year is Teacher Appreciation Week. This year alone has proven that teachers are needed and beyond important. I just want to take a quick second and tell you that what each of you do in the classroom each day is nothing short of miraculous for all of our students. Too often teachers fly under the radar. We work tirelessly and give of ourselves in service to our kids and their families without a great deal of notice. It is easy to get burned out when you are juggling all the things each day in your classrooms as well as your own lives and families. Your work does not go unnoticed though...there are children in your classrooms that will remember you and will remember the way you made them feel. It's not a grand prize or a certificate, but nothing feels better than a note from a former student telling you thank you.
I hope that these remaining weeks of the year run smoothly for you. Thank you again for your work and dedication to our children each day. You are appreciated!
Here are just a few items to bring to your attention in this issue:

ETHNIC STUDIES CONFERENCE
Ethnic Studies Cohort
If your role is to develop a Social Studies curriculum for your district, please join us for a series of monthly cohort meetings this spring to explore the process of implementing Ethnic Studies courses (specifically the Mexican-American and African-American Studies courses) in your district. If you have already implemented these courses, we encourage you to join in and share your experiences as well as learn new ideas to implement next year. We will discuss proposal ideas, planning the courses, instructional resources, and strategies for teaching with cultural sensitivity. Find support from educators in both Region 10 and Region 11 to create a curriculum that will be ready to implement in the 2021-2022 school year.
UPDATE:
OUR COHORT WILL CONTINUE THIS SUMMER WITH DATES ON JUNE 29, JULY 12 AND AUGUST 10. REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOW.
