The Leader's Compass is a newsletter focused on growth in four key areas that directly impact leadership: relationships, efficiency, communication, and life-long learning.

Our North Star: Relationships Our North Star: Relationships

Whenever moving to a new position or school, it is so important to first focus on building relationships with colleagues. However, that term "building relationships" can be quite ambiguous. That task is typically easy with certain people but can be a bit more of challenge with others. I would encourage you to a) reflect on who you may be unintentionally avoiding and b) lean into the discomfort and focus more intentionally on those relationships. Sometimes it just takes an awareness and a few small steps to strengthen that connection. This article is a great read about relationships at the workplace. I've summarized a few specific action steps that resonated with me:

1. Just finished a meeting? Overcome the urge to dash out immediately and, instead, approach someone and drop an, "I'm________," followed by a "loved your comment about ______."

2. Have a moment when you return to your computer? Consider sending an email along the lines of: "Thanks for the conversation. Love that we are both __________________. Looking forward to working together."

3. If you could use a second opinion on something, try asking for their input by saying, "I'm working on ________ and would love your perspective on ________."

Often times, it can just be the increased proximity and conversation that builds a relationship. Reflect on who in your workplace you could focus on creating a connection boost.

Sustaining a Growth Mindset: Life-Long Learning Sustaining a Growth Mindset: Life-Long Learning

If you are like me, a good quote can resonate deeply with my leadership practice. James Clear, author of the book "Atomic Habits," has a weekly newsletter called 3-2-1 that offers three ideas, two quotes, and 1 question to consider for the week. Here was a recent favorite of mine:

"One of the great mistakes in life is suffering for years because you didn't want to feel foolish for five minutes.

  • You don't want to apologize, so you let a relationship deteriorate.
  • You're scared of the sting of rejection, so you don't ask for what you want.
  • You fear people will say your idea is dumb, so you never start the business.

Nobody likes feeling foolish, but the feeling fades quickly. The willingness to endure five minutes of discomfort turns out to be a meaningful dividing line in life."

Wise Words: Communication is Key Wise Words: Communication is Key

The "Coaching Habit" was a great resource for me when I served as an elementary instructional coach. While these are labeled coaching questions, I have always felt that they are relevant to any supportive conversation you might have with a colleague. After all, to be a great communicator, you need to be a good listener - and a solid set of core questions can help build that skillset.
