WIDA IN PROGRESS
Helping Students Shine on the WIDA Assessment
From March 3rd through March 6th, ROHS ELD students will be participating in the WIDA assessment. The WIDA test measures students’ progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English, and it is designed to show growth over time—not to create pressure. Families can support their students by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time each day of testing. Encouraging words at home and reminders that this assessment is simply an opportunity to demonstrate what they already know can make a meaningful difference. Students can prepare by practicing calm focus, taking their time, and doing their personal best without comparing themselves to others. Teachers can help by maintaining a positive, reassuring environment, reviewing familiar routines, and minimizing disruptions during testing days. When we approach the WIDA assessment as a shared effort—grounded in preparation, encouragement, and confidence—students are far more likely to perform well and feel proud of their progress.
March Reading Month
March as Reading Month is a special time to celebrate the joy and importance of reading for students of all ages, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Reading not only builds vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills, but it also opens doors to new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. For students who speak multiple languages at home, reading in their home language is just as valuable—it strengthens literacy skills, reinforces cultural identity, and supports overall academic success.
At the high school, students are diving into the inspiring story of Harriet Tubman. Along with reading the book, they will have the opportunity to watch the movie adaptation, bringing the story to life and deepening their understanding of her courage and leadership. High school students are particularly excited about this book because it highlights themes of resilience, freedom, and social justice—topics that resonate today and spark meaningful discussions.
We encourage all our readers—students, families, and staff—to share what they are currently reading. Your recommendations can inspire others to explore new genres, authors, and stories, making Reading Month a community-wide celebration of learning and imagination.
Supporting Seniors Through College Admissions and FAFSA
As our high school seniors prepare to graduate and take the next step in their educational journey, we are committed to supporting them every step of the way. For students who need guidance with college admissions or FAFSA applications, we accompany them to Oakland Community College (OCC) and provide support during their meetings with the Student Services Center and the FAFSA Office. While we do not provide formal sessions, our team ensures that students feel confident and guided throughout the process. We also warmly invite parents to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding their child’s transition to higher education. For additional guidance or information, please contact our team member, Janka Demiri, at Janka.demiri@royaloalschools.org. We are here to help families feel informed and supported during this important milestone.
