Emmaus Catholic Primary School
Term 3 Week 8 Newsletter: Friday 11 September 2026
P R A Y E R
In celebration of Emmaus Day next week, below is our Emmaus prayer
Dear Lord
We give you thanks for all that you do for us and give us, every day.
We ask you to be with us as we journey together at Emmaus Catholic Primary School. Be beside us and be within us as our companion on our journey.
Just as you walked with your apostles on the road to Emmaus, we pray that you walk with us, opening our eyes to see you in others in our school community.
Amen.
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
WHAT ARE OUR PARENTS DOING?
A PARTNERSHIP THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Dear Parents & Caregivers
I would like to take a moment to sincerely acknowledge and thank a good number of our parents for the incredible work that you are doing at home to support your children’s learning.
As a school, we talk often about the importance of the partnership between home and school, and I want to reassure you that this is not simply something we say — we genuinely see the difference that this partnership is making every day.
Over the last two weeks, our leadership team has been meeting with all class teachers for lengthy discussions in a variety of topics to do with their teaching and classroom work and to also discuss how our students are progressing. The feedback we are receiving from teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. Time and again, teachers are telling us how pleased they are with the improvement they are seeing in so many of our children.
That improvement does not happen by accident.
It is the result of the consistent effort of our ‘teachers at school’, combined with the support, encouragement and time that you are giving your children at home. Whether you are sitting beside your child listening to them read, practising phonics sounds, working through multiplication tables, helping them learn their number facts, revisiting spelling patterns, or simply talking to them about what they have learned that day — all of these small moments add up to something very significant.
We know that family life is busy. We also know that finding time to sit down and practise learning at home isn't always easy. That is why we want you to know just how much your efforts are valued. Even a short, regular burst of practice can build confidence, strengthen understanding and help children become more fluent and independent in their learning.
One of the easiest ways to know what you can be working on at home is through your child's class newsletter/memo. Our teachers use these newsletters/memos to share the learning focus for the week or coming period, giving you a useful window into what your child is learning at school and some ideas about how you can reinforce those skills at home.
If you are ever unsure about what would be most beneficial for your child, please don't hesitate to speak with their class teacher. Simply asking, “What is one area I could work on with my child at home?” can provide you with a clear and manageable place to start.
You don't need to be a teacher to make a difference. You don't need hours of spare time or elaborate resources. What matters most is that your child sees that the adults around them value learning, believe in their ability and are willing to spend time helping them succeed.
And we can see the impact.
When children come into school having practised their reading, recalled their tables more quickly, recognised their phonics sounds with greater confidence or developed a stronger understanding of a skill they have been working on at home, it gives teachers a stronger foundation to build upon. Just as importantly, children begin to recognise that their learning is something that matters both at school and at home.
That consistency is incredibly powerful.
So, on behalf of our entire staff and leadership team, thank you. Thank you to those parents who are giving time to their children. Thank you for the encouragement you are providing. Thank you for listening to your children read, practising those tricky facts, asking questions, celebrating successes and encouraging them when something feels difficult.
Most importantly, thank you for showing your children that you believe in them.
The progress we are seeing is a shared success. Our teachers are working incredibly hard in classrooms, and you are reinforcing and extending that learning at home. When we work together, our children benefit the most.
Please keep going. Those few minutes of reading, those extra repetitions of a multiplication fact, that quick phonics practice or that conversation about learning may sometimes feel like a small thing — but collectively, they can make a very, very big difference.
We are incredibly grateful for your support, and we are proud of the progress our children are making.
This really is a partnership, and together we are making a difference.

TEACHING SPRINTS
Over the past term, we have introduced a new approach to our teaching and learning program: Teaching Sprints. This initiative forms part of a key goal within our Catholic School Improvement Plan and has been introduced to further strengthen our focus on targeted teaching and improved student outcomes.
Teaching Sprints are short, intensive and highly focused periods of learning, typically incorporating brief 10-minute sessions. They are designed to target a specific skill, address an identified learning need, consolidate understanding, or trial a particular teaching approach. By providing students with regular, purposeful opportunities to focus on a clearly defined area of learning, we aim to accelerate progress and build greater confidence and proficiency.
The early results have been very encouraging. We are already seeing positive improvements across many of our students, particularly in the specific skills and areas that have been targeted through these sessions. This progress reinforces the value of providing students with focused, deliberate and responsive teaching opportunities.
I am very pleased with the progress we have seen to date and look forward to seeing the continued impact of Teaching Sprints as we move forward. We remain committed to using targeted approaches such as this to ensure that every student is supported to make meaningful progress and reach their full potential.

FATHER’S DAY
Thank you to all our fantastic dads who attended our Father’s Day Fiesta last Wednesday. We could not believe the number of dads and carers and male role models that attended the afternoon. We loved it and the children loved it even more. To see their little faces with smiles and hear the laughter was beautiful.
Events like this certainly continue to build our culture and it is the presence of our parents that does this.
I was however, a little disappointed at a small number of dads who collected their children and left the school grounds. Please be aware that staff and sometimes our P&F go to great lengths to organise and prepare for these events.

Celebrating our Wonderful Education Assistants
On Monday 31 August, we celebrated Education Assistant Appreciation Day, providing us with a special opportunity to recognise and thank the wonderful Education Assistants who contribute so much to life at Emmaus.
The work of our EAs extends across every part of the school day. They support students with their learning, provide targeted intervention and small-group instruction, assist children with additional needs, reinforce positive behaviour and social-emotional skills, prepare resources, support classroom routines, supervise and care for students, and step in wherever an extra pair of capable and caring hands is needed. Often, it is their quiet encouragement, patience and reassurance that helps a child overcome a challenge, experience success or simply have a better day.
Our Education Assistants are also invaluable partners to our teaching staff. Their knowledge of our students, observations, initiative, flexibility and willingness to help make an enormous difference in our classrooms and across the wider school. The support they provide allows our teachers to better respond to individual needs and ensures that so many of our children receive those important extra opportunities to practise, consolidate and grow.
On behalf of our staff and students, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our Education Assistants. We are incredibly grateful for the energy, care and commitment you bring to Emmaus each day. The work you do matters, the relationships you build matter, and the difference you make in the lives of our children is deeply appreciated.
Happy Education Assistant Appreciation Day – we are very fortunate to have you as part of our Emmaus family!

CELEBRATING OUR FATHER'S & FATHER FIGURES
On Wednesday 2 September, Emmaus celebrated our wonderful fathers and father figures with a fun filled Father’s Day Fiesta! It was a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter, creativity and games.
Families enjoyed spending time together on the oval, taking part in games including soccer, football, basketball, tug-of-war, throwing cans and block construction. There was plenty of creativity happening too, with children and their special father figures designing terrific ties and Father’s Day badges, while others enjoyed giving their dads a fun ‘shave’ at our shaving station!
Our Year One students also presented a fabulous assembly item celebrating the special father figures in their lives. It was lovely to see our students so excited to share their school with the special men in their lives. The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the important role that fathers, grandfathers and father figures play in the lives of our children.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our Father’s Day Fiesta such a memorable afternoon. We hope all our fathers and father figures felt very special and appreciated!
Y1 FATHER'S DAY ASSEMBLY - DAD'S GOT TALENT!
Our Year One’s had a great time taking over the stage for our “Dad’s Got Talent” Father’s Day Assembly! From BBQ dads and lawn dads to sports dads, taxi dads and some very enthusiastic dance moves, there was plenty of fun and laughter throughout the performance. It was a very entertaining way for our Year One students to kick off the Father’s Day celebrations!
THANK YOU HON. RITA SAFFIOTI MLA
Last Friday, we were delighted to welcome the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA back to Emmaus Catholic Primary School. Having visited Emmaus previously, Mrs Saffioti was incredibly impressed by just how much our school has grown since her last visit, from our rapidly increasing student population to the significant expansion of our facilities and the wonderful new buildings now taking shape across our school.
The visit also provided us with an opportunity to once again express our sincere appreciation for the generous support Mrs Saffioti has provided to Emmaus through small-scale grants. This has included $35,000 towards our new faction and interschool gazebos and school storage shed, as well as a further $27,000 towards new outdoor play equipment and sensory play items.
These additions have been extremely well received and are already making a positive difference for the growing number of students at Emmaus. As our school continues to expand, investment in quality outdoor spaces, equipment, storage and resources becomes increasingly important in ensuring our facilities grow alongside our students.
We are very grateful to Mrs Saffioti for her ongoing interest in and support of Emmaus and for taking the time to visit us again and see firsthand the exciting growth occurring within our school community.
YEAR 2 - BRICKS 4 KIDS INCURSION
On Friday 28 August, Bricks 4 Kidz visited the Year 2s to teach them about Robotics. All students built a Cricket Walker Robot, which they learnt how to code and control using the coding language of Scratch. The robotics were made of Lego and had motors and spinning wheels which the class had to assemble. Students then tested the ability of their robots through various movement activities and a race! The class had a great time applying their skills they have been learning in Digital Technology to real-life robots and seeing how software can move robots so easily. While there were no clear winners in robot racing, the kids had a brilliant time using the machines!
Y1s - KALAMUNDA HISTORY VILLAGE - A STEP BACK IN TIME
On Monday, our Year Ones had an amazing day at Kalamunda History Village! The students loved stepping back in time and exploring what life was like in the past. It was so lovely to see how excited and curious they were as they moved through the different parts of the village and had a go at so many hands-on activities.
Some of our highlights included watching the apple sorting machine, making peg dolls, playing with old-fashioned toys and climbing aboard an old fire truck. The students also loved seeing an old dunny, having a go at ironing with a cast-iron iron, washing clothes using an early washing machine and turning the handle to squeeze the clothes through the rollers. They had lots of fun using the old typewriters and visiting the old school, where they wrote on blackboards and learnt a little about what school was like in the past (including learning about the cane!).
It was such a fun day and a wonderful way for the students to bring their learning about the past to life.
A huge thank you to our amazing parent helpers who joined us on the day. We are so grateful for your time, support and willingness to get involved. Having you there helped make the day run so smoothly and made the experience even more special for our Year Ones. We really appreciate you!
RU OK DAY - A Conversation Can Make a Difference...
On Thursday 10 September, Emmaus acknowledged R U OK? Day, an important reminder of the power of connection, conversation and genuinely looking out for one another. R U OK? Day encourages us to take the time to notice those around us, ask the simple question “Are you OK?”, listen with care, and continue to check in with friends, family members and colleagues—not just on this day, but throughout the year.
It was wonderful to see this message of connection reflected within our own Emmaus community. Families were able to enjoy a coffee and take a few moments to stop, chat and check in with one another at the beginning of the day.
A very special thank you goes to the Muir family, who once again generously funded the coffee van for our school families. Their generosity provided more than simply a morning coffee—it created an opportunity for members of our community to come together, connect and share a friendly “How are you going?” with one another.
At Emmaus, where we are Journeying Together, R U OK? Day is a timely reminder that sometimes the smallest conversations can make a meaningful difference. Ask. Listen. Encourage action. Check in.
SAVE THE DATE....OPEN NIGHT IS COMING!
Our much-loved Emmaus Open Night is not too far away. Save the date, invite your extended families and head into school to check out all the awesome learning across the grades!
NEXT WEEK...EMMAUS DAY
FROM THE DISCIPLESHIP COMMITTEE - Wheelchairs For Kids
Last Friday, the Year 6 Discipleship Committee invited Mr Di Carlo from Wheelchairs for Kids to our assembly. Mr Di Carlo explained the work of Brother Ollie's organisation, Wheelchairs For Kids, making thousands of wheelchairs for children in poor countries who cannot walk or have mobility issues. Students saw a video of the wheelchairs being made and the efforts of many volunteers who do the hard work, including packing the wheelchairs before being transported overseas to many children in great need.
On the last Wednesday of Term 3, Wednesday 23 September, students across all grades are kindly asked to donate $2 to Wheelchairs for Kids and wear crazy hair, a crazy hat and / or a footy shirt or accessories to school. Every $2 given will be donated to make many more wheelchairs for kids in need.
We thank Mr Di Carlo for his time and showing us all how our small contribution can make such a big difference to the many lives of children who are gifted these sturdy, much needed wheelchairs.

URSTRONG LANGUAGE OF FRIENDSHIP
A huge thank you to all of our wonderful parents and students who logged on to our URStrong Language of Friendship Workshop! It was fantastic to families getting involved and learning together.
The workshop gave students and parents the opportunity to explore the Language of Friendship and learn practical ways to communicate, solve friendship problems and build strong, healthy friendships. These are important skills for our students as they navigate the ups and downs of friendships.
We really appreciate the time and effort families put into joining us and supporting our students' wellbeing. Thank you for being such an important part of our URStrong community!
WELLBEING IN PRE-PRIMARY - OUR BODIES BELONG TO US!
In Pre-Primary Blue this term we have been learning about our bodies. We are able to label all of the parts of our bodies using the correct names. We have also been investigating safe and unsafe or unwanted touches and what to do if we feel scared or uncomfortable. Pantosaurus' song reminds us that our bodies belong to us and has helped us to learn the importance of saying "NO!" and telling an adult we trust.
