Superintendent's Community Update

Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

I hope everyone is enjoying the winter break and taking advantage of the many activities happening this week.

Thank you and congratulations to our Pell musicians on their successful winter concert "Heart Strings and Chorus Sings". The musicians and chorus gave a fabulous performance last Thursday evening to a full house at Pell Elementary School.

Congratulations to our RHS Girls' Basketball team for their quarterfinal victory over North Kingstown on Monday night, RHS Boys' Basketball for their preliminary playoff win against Tiverton and a hard-fought contest on Tuesday night, and a shout out for RHS Senior Patrick Bryan, the VFW Rhode Island District 2 Voice of Democracy essay contest winner!

Espero que todos estén disfrutando de las vacaciones de invierno y estén aprovechando las muchas actividades que se realizarán esta semana.

Congratulations to all of our winter student athletes and coaches!

Boys Basketball - It was a tough game Tuesday evening to a SRO - turning many fans away as our Vikings played a hard game. In the end, the home game advantage for the Islanders won out. Congratulations to our neighboring team. Many thanks to Coach Newsome for a fine season- and most importantly of all we are so proud of the young men that led the team this year to an exciting season. Go Vikings!

Boys Swim - Nick Bodycoat won two individual Division III meet events over the weekend and finished as a runner up in the 200-yard medley relay with Patrick Bryan, Matthew Mullins, and Zeke Wolfskehl. Nick qualified for two events and will represent RHS at the State meet.

Girls Swim - Kira Parsons, Kate Michael, Julia Page and Fallon Bagley. Kira and Kate finished in the top three in individual events and teamed up with Julia and Fallon to place second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Girls Track - Amarie Williams qualified for the New England Championship after finishing fifth in the high jump at Saturday's State Championship meet. Congratulations Amarie- Go Vikings!

Baloncesto masculino: fue un juego difícil el martes por la noche para un SRO, lo que alejó a muchos fanáticos mientras nuestros Vikings jugaban un juego difícil. Al final, ganó la ventaja de jugar en casa para los Islanders. Felicidades a nuestro equipo vecino. Rogers High School senior Patrick Bryan is the Veterans of Foreign Wars of RI, District 2 first place essay winner for the Voice of Democracy contest, and state finalist. Patrick received his award at the RI VFW Convention on Saturday, February, 11, 2023.

Thank you to RHS Teacher Coleen Turner for getting our RHS students involved. Great job Patrick! Thank you for all your hard work.

Patrick Bryan, estudiante de último año de Rogers High School, es Veterans of Foreign Wars of RI, ganador del primer lugar en el ensayo del Distrito 2 para el concurso Voice of Democracy y finalista estatal. Patrick recibió su premio en la Convención VFW de RI el sábado 11 de febrero de 2023.

Working Cities Newport is holding a t-shirt design contest to stimulate ideas about what kids want to do to make a living when they grow up. Submissions will be displayed as “I Want to Be…” at popular Newport locations, including the Newport Art Museum School and the Newport Public Library.

Thompson and Rogers students are encouraged to submit their t-shirt designs by 12:00pm on Tuesday, February 28th. Click here for submission guidelines.

Working Cities Newport está organizando un concurso de diseño de camisetas para estimular ideas sobre lo que los niños quieren hacer para ganarse la vida cuando crezcan. Girl Scouts of Rhode Island will host three free Make New Friends events starting on March 16. The events will take place at the Middletown Public Library, 700 West Main Road at 5:30 pm. Meetings are open to any Aquidneck Island students, ages Kindergarten and up.

The Rhode Island Department of Education is currently administering its annual SurveyWorks Family Survey, which is an opportunity for family members to provide feedback about Newport Public Schools. This is an ideal tool to help us update and create a new strategic and educational plan for our schools. You can take the short survey online through March 31st. To take the survey, visit: bit.ly/ridefamily then choose your child’s school (Pell, Thompson, or Rogers) from the dropdown list. You may also complete the survey using the QR code. The more information you provide us the better informed decisions we can make. This is a team effort - so please help us by filling out the survey. Responses are anonymous, and your feedback is incredibly valuable to our school leadership teams.
