October National Bullying Prevention Month

During the month of October, we put an extra focus on treating people with kindness. Our counselor, Dr. Griffin, uses her weekly guidance times to teach students specific skills to help stop bullying. The Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit teaches students:

  • how to recognize bullying
  • how to report bullying
  • how to refuse bullying
  • how to be a bystander that stands up and is a part of the solution

In addition to counseling lessons, we are bringing in a dance team from New York to help us reinforce kindness and how it is everyone's responsibility to respect themselves and those around them. The Echo Dance team will perform and spread their positive message with our students the morning of Wednesday, October 22.

PreventED is a local agency that provides lesson to our students that also supports the anti-bullying and safe choices message. PreventED will be in 4th and 5th grade classrooms during the month of October. They will visit other classrooms throughout the year.

D.A.R.E. instruction for 5th grade students

Every week our school resource officer, Officer Callaway, is with our 5th grade students teaching them about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and helping them make safe and responsible choices. Students make DARE posters, have discussions about peer pressure, stress, and bullying. Students have been engaged and asking good questions. DARE wraps up on December 4 with our DARE graduation. Parents will be invited to attend the graduation. There will be more details as the date gets closer.
