5 Things to Know Weekly Update
June 3, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
Happy Pride Month! If you are on campus, you will see our brand-new flag flying and the recognition on our marquees. We are pleased to have these indications of support, particularly in a region that is not always particularly supportive. June will be a busy month for myself, the VPs and other managers, and classified professionals, especially, closing out the year and preparing for fall. And in between, summer classes start on June 10 – it’s a lot. Make sure to take time to enjoy the June Gloom and walk around campus for a break. 😊

For managers, the CDMA year-end celebration will be tomorrow (6/4) at Kenwood's Kitchen & Tap in Costa Mesa (1555 Adam's Ave) at 4 p.m. Last year, we had only 3 of us attend, so please try to come if you can. We had MANY managers nominated and Linda Ju-Ong was named Manager of the Year, so let’s all come out and support them.
We concluded interviews last week for both the new Nursing faculty member and the VP of Instruction, and I expect both choices will go to the Board meeting later this month. It’s gratifying that we attract good candidates for our positions – and that’s an indication that everyone here is working hard to make GWC an excellent college, so thank you!
Both summer session and fall semester are open for enrollment, and summer is already over 1100 FTES (a 10% increase over last summer). We have a great deal of advertising out and more coming soon. Tell your friends and neighbors (or even your enemies) that we have something to offer everyone.
At this point, the state budget continues to look fairly good for us, with no significant cuts. We will know more over the next few weeks and keep everyone updated.
My week includes the CDMA event, an SIBC (Special Investigators Basic Course) graduation, and the previously mentioned digging in and preparing for fall. I’ll be here all week if you need anything.
