Principal's Message
It's always busy at Hallinan!
Tomorrow, Friday, April 30, all classes will watch a video or read a story to learn about what to expect and do during a lockdown. We practice emergency drills throughout the school year to keep our Hallinan Family safe and prepared, in case of an emergency. Sometimes we evacuate the building and sometimes we stay indoors. For this particular drill classes will watch a video or read a story rather than move to a safe spot within their classrooms. For additional information, and for links to the material, please see "Lockdown Drill Instruction" under District Information below.
I've been in a lot of classes this week teaching reading and writing. The picture below is with Maddie, Isaac and Ella, who are all in Mrs Graver's first grade class. They are reading Flat Stanley so I brought along a Flat Melissa and we discussed what it would be like to travel easily to lots of different locations.
Mrs Lunde (2nd Grade) and Mrs Pilkington (6th Grade Math) sent me photos of some of the things their classes are currently doing: reading, writing poetry and math conversions. Scroll below to see the photos. I was inspired by the 2nd Grade, so I thought I'd take a little stab at creating a Hallinan haiku poem.
The sun is shining
Students are engaged, learning
There's no place like HAL!
Enjoy the day!

Your Intentions for Next School Year?
LOSD is planning for in-person five full days a week for the 2021-22 school year.
As part of that plan, LOSD is exploring offering an online-only program for students who choose to remain fully remote for the 2021-22 school year. This offering will be different than LO Online. Next year's online program model will be dependent on interest in being remote.
We understand there are many unknowns at this time. Based on what you know now, please answer the questions in this survey to help LOSD in our planning. Please complete one survey for each student in your care. Thank you.
Lockdown Drill Instruction
Before the end of April, our teachers will be explaining the process of what we would do in an emergency lockdown, but we will not be practicing the procedures. For our Kindergarten through 3rd grade students teachers will use this Lockdown Story Book to guide discussions and in 4th and 5th grade students will watch and discuss this video.
You’ve heard the terms “lockout” and “lockdown.” While the two terms sound somewhat similar, they mean very different things. Here are our definitions, which can assist with conversations at home:
A lockout means there is a possible threat outside the school. Most often, this is due to police activity in the area or the neighborhood. Police might be searching for a suspect in a crime, or someone might have spotted a person wanted for questioning. During a lockout, it is business as usual inside the building. If students are outside, they are brought inside, the doors are locked and classes continue. Typically, police activity in the neighborhood is resolved quickly.
A lockdown means there is a possible threat inside the school. This is not business as usual. Hallways are cleared, all classroom doors are locked, and lights are turned out. Students and staff are instructed to stay quiet and out of sight during a lockdown.
We follow the Standard Response Protocol: https://iloveuguys.org/srp.html
We thank you for your help and cooperation, as we work to provide safe learning environments for all students in the Lake Oswego School District.
State Testing Notification
Oregon school districts are required to administer state assessments this spring in English Language Arts (ELA), math, and science. The Oregon Department of Education’s request to waive these assessments due to the pandemic was denied by the federal government. However, a revised waiver has been conditionally approved to require fewer assessments at each grade level this year, per the below schedule. In addition, the ELA and math assessments have been shortened and will take less time to complete this year.
- Grade 3: ELA
- Grade 4: Math
- Grade 5: Science
- Grade 6: ELA
- Grade 7: ELA and Math
- Grade 8: Math and Science
- Grade 11: ELA and Math
- ELA and/or math (grades 3, 4, 6–8 and 11): submit the state opt-out form to your child’s school. The form is available on the State Assessments page of the District website.
- Science (grades 5 and 8 only): submit a written request for exemption to your child’s school (email or US mail).

New Student Registration for 2021-22 School Year
Make sure to register your student for kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year by Friday, Apr. 30. In the event that kindergarten enrollment requires a lottery due to over-capacity at any school, incoming kindergarten students must be registered by April 30, 2021, to be included in the tiered priority process.
