Dear Laurel Woods Community,
It was such a wonderful week to be back at Laurel Woods! On Monday, our staff welcomed students back from Winter Break with open arms and jumped right into learning. On Thursday, our 4th and 5th graders performed in the Chorus Concert—it was so exciting to see them singing, smiling, and bobbing their heads along to the music.
On Friday morning, families joined us for our Coffee & Connection Walking Club event. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen family connections to LWES, foster community-building, and highlight the North Laurel Community Center (NLCC) as a local resource hub for families. We were thrilled to have 32 individuals participate! We are so grateful to the North Laurel Community Center for hosting, as well as Ms. Wilder and others who helped facilitate this meaningful opportunity.
We wrapped up the week with our school Spelling Bee. We are so proud of all the students who participated—it takes a lot of courage to stand on stage in front of your peers and spell!
We are also approaching the end of the second marking period on January 23rd. We encourage you to review your child’s grades in Canvas and contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions ahead of the grading period deadlines.
With Pride,
Dr. Burks, Ms. Braxton, & Ms. Lee
Year-to-Date Attendance Rate
Our Year-to-Date (YTD) Attendance Rate reflects the percentage of school days our students have attended LWES from the beginning of the school year up to the current date. Last year, we finished the year with a 93.2% attendance rate. This year, our goal is to reach 95%. Currently, we are at 94%, and with your continued support, we know we can reach our goal by the end of the year.
To keep you informed of our progress, we will share our updated YTD attendance rate each week in our newsletter.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students be present and engaged in school every single day!
Join us as a Mystery Reader
We are “searching” for volunteers to read in our classrooms from now until the end of the school year. Since this is meant to be a MYSTERY, all information is meant to be kept from your child, including the day that you are reading and the clues you will share about yourself. Students love having a family member or special person visit and share in learning by reading a favorite story aloud!
Your child’s teacher can provide you with a book to read, or you can bring one of your favorite books. (the book will need to be approved in advance by LWES staff)
Any adult (parent, guardian, grandparent, aunt/uncle, older sibling) is welcome to join in the fun! If you are interested, please fill out and return this form.
Our Family and Community Engagement Contact, Nikee Singh will contact you to schedule a date and time for you to be a MYSTERY READER.
Interested in volunteering for Inclement Weather Arrival
During our most recent Coffee and Conversation, a suggestion was shared to allow students to enter the building early during rainy or stormy weather so they are not standing outside in inclement conditions. To help bring this plan to fruition, we need your support!
If you are available between 8:20–8:30 a.m. and are flexible to be notified the day of to help supervise students, please complete this form. An LWES staff member will be in touch with you soon.

Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment
All students in grades 1-5 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment during the Winter testing window.
The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure your student’s academic progress. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. To learn more about the MAP assessment, please visit: https://www.nwea.org/the-map-suite/common-questions-families/
Please note that there is no need for your child to study for the MAP assessment. Arriving on time to school on testing days is very important, however, if your child is absent, makeups will be offered within the testing window. As usual, please make sure they are well rested and eat their normal breakfast the day of testing.
The Winter testing schedule is:
Grade 1 - 2/3 ELA, 2/11 Math
Grade 2 - 1/29 ELA, 2/11 Math
Grade 3 - 2/3 ELA, 2/19 Math
Grade 4 - 1/27 ELA, 2/9 Math
Grade 5 - 1/7 ELA, 1/9 Math
