Honoring the Fallen, the Families, and the Heros

During morning announcements we honored the victims, their families, and the first responders who risked their lives with a one-minute moment of silence. This is what your students heard.

Good morning, Frost staff and students.

Today, our nation marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001; the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil in US History. Undoubtedly, the adults in our building can tell you exactly where they were on September 11. Schools closed, planes were grounded, and Americans fell under a fog of what was happening and were anxious of what was to come.

This morning let’s pause to honor and remember the 2,977 souls who lost their lives during the tragic events of that day. As part of our remembrance, we reflect on the timeline of that morning across our nation:

The morning of this tragedy started like any other. Parents went to work, children went to school and daycare, and air travel was business as usual. Then the following events took place.

The World Trade Center (New York City) was attacked.

  • 8:46 AM: American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower.
  • 9:03 AM: United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
  • 9:59 AM: The South Tower collapsed.
  • 10:28 AM: The North Tower collapsed.

The Pentagon (Arlington, Virginia) was attacked.

  • 9:37 AM: American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

Shanksville, Pennsylvania

  • 10:03 AM: United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field after heroic passengers fought back, preventing the plane from hitting its intended target in Washington, D.C.

This morning as we honor all of the victims, their families, and the brave first responders who risked their lives to save others, please join me in a one-minute moment of silence to remember them and reflect on the spirit of unity that brought our country together after this tragedy.

Each month at Frost students are nominated by their teachers for the consistent demonstration of one of our character traits. If a student is selected as an exemplar for this trait, they will have their picture taken and displayed outside Mrs. Katz' office, and will receive a student-of-the-month certificate. This month's trait is Respect - a positive feeling or polite action shown toward someone or something important.

Just a Few Reminders

Greetings Frost Families,

It was a much quieter this week in the nest. i-Ready testing is complete and we have returned to our regular day schedule with the addition of Falcon Time. The Falcon Dollar economy is alive and well based on students visiting the school store, and we've only had a few cell phone issues. There are a couple of small issues I would like to put on your radar as we move through marking period one.

Student drop off and pick-up procedures have been put in place to ensure the safety of our staff and students. Please follow the directions of our bussing and morning drop off staff, we've had a few parents who have responded angrily to being redirected, these folks are only doing their job.

Next, we have students being dropped off a little too early in the mornings. The building is not open for student arrival until 7:30 am. When the mornings get darker and it get's colder outside it will not be safe for students to be outside and we do not have adequate adult supervision indoors until 7:30 am.

Overall, things are running as they usually do at this point in the school year. If you or your students have any question about our building operations or code of conduct, you can access our website or call the main office anytime.

It takes a village,

S. Wheeler

The Importance of a Good Nights Sleep

Staying up late to scroll through social media and catch up with friends on phones may be second nature for many teens. But the habit comes at a cost: Forty-three percent of parents say their teens struggle to fall asleep — or wake up and can't get back to sleep — according to the latest University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health. More than half of parents of teens with sleep troubles think electronics are to blame. Once they hit puberty, adolescents need eight to 10 hours of sleep per night, but just over a third of American teens say they are getting at least eight hours on a typical school night. And research shows that inadequate or disrupted sleep can have long-lasting health effects.

"Teen sleep deprivation is a growing public health issue because most young adults simply aren't getting enough sleep," says Ellen Selkie, M.D., an adolescent medicine physician at Mott. "We sometimes focus on sleep quality for young children but forget that adolescents' brains and bodies are still developing, too."

Poor sleep negatively affects teens' ability to concentrate and perform well at school, Selkie notes. Research also links inadequate sleep to health problems ranging from obesity to anxiety and depression. Mood problems also can impair relationships. For teen drivers, lack of quality sleep can be particularly dangerous, increasing their risk of car accidents.

So what's a parent to do?

Selkie, in her own words, offered simple ways to improve a teen's sleep hygiene in her article 10 Tips to Help Your Teen Sleep Better.

Be well,

Each year students at Frost suggest interest for clubs they would like to see running at Frost. Each club has an adult advisor, but for the most part are run and organized by our students. All students must have a permission slip signed by a parent to participate in after school clubs and must have transportation home. Clubs are a great way to connect groups of students with similar interests and make new friends. In the past we have had:

  • Digital Editing - Mrs. King
  • Math Club - Mrs. Townley
  • Drawing Club - Mrs. Georvassilis
  • Video Game Club - Mrs. Pittman & Mr. Chinavare
  • GEMS - Mrs. Georvassilis
  • Volleyball Club - Mr. Rumon
  • Cross Stitch & Crochet Club - Mrs. Kowalske & Mrs. Lee
  • Quiz Bowl Club - Mrs. Pittman & Mr. Zeigler
  • GSA - Mrs. Georvassilis & Ms. Merritt
