SMS MVP Community Service Hours

In order to inspire and encourage community participation for our youth, all SMS students are required to complete twenty community service hours by the end of their 8th grade year. Community service forms can be found in the office. All activities must be performed within the property lines of the school district or on behalf of an organization that lays in the district. All pre-approved locations and activities are on the back of each form. Please have administrator pre-approval before participating in any other activities.

SMS January Students of the Month

Wayne State College Science Bowl

Mrs. Jennifer Hanna, 8th grade science teacher, had the honor of taking a team of SMS students to Wayne State College to compete on Saturday, February 1st. The students did well and even won a match! We look forward to continuing this tradition at SMS!

Incentive Day

Third Quarter Incentive Day is coming up! Here is a reminder of the school policy in regard to Incentive Day:

Each student at Schuyler Middle School will have the opportunity to participate in an Incentive Day the first through third quarters of the school year. Incentive Day is an excused absence from school for students that meet a certain set of rigid criteria. In order to earn Incentive Day a student must maintain an 85% in all classes with no quarter failures, have no office referrals, no Homework Zone or Academic Intervention skips, have no unexcused absences or have excessive absences (5 or more days). The 3rd quarter incentive day does have additional criteria in order to participate; all fines and overdue books will need to be returned or paid, 6th grade students will need to have completed 5 community service hours, 7th grade students will need to have completed 10 community service hours, and 8th grade students will need to have completed 20 community service hours. All of the previous criteria must be met before a predetermined deadline set by administration and administration will make the final determination of students that qualify for Incentive day.

SMS Boys Basketball

This year's boys basketball team is led by a teacher new to Schuyler Middle School, Mr. Kaiser. Mr. Kaiser was a standout high school athlete that played basketball and baseball at Midland University in Fremont. Mr. Kaiser is joined by Mr. Halvorsen, Mr. Shaeffer, and Mr. Nelson as coaches.

The players have been improving steadily. The 7th grade had a close loss against David City and a big win against Madison to finish out the month of January. The 8th grade had two close losses against David City and Madison. With consistent time in the weight room and playing in the SCS Field House, in addition to practice, the teams will continue to grow and improve!

A special thank you goes to the parents that are very supportive at both our home and away games!
