On June 22nd the 4J school board approved the pilot of three elementary teacher librarians! It has been over 15 years since 4J has had elementary teacher librarians in schools! The role has evolved tremendously in that time. Today's teacher librarians not only curate a diverse, responsive collection but also build instructional partnerships, curate digital resources specific to teachers' needs, empower students as creators, provide safe places for all students and SEL support, and inspire the reading lives of students and teachers.

Please join me in welcoming Martha Dyre, teacher librarian at Chavez, Robbie Cortez, teacher librarian at Holt, and Debbie Pfeiffer, teacher librarian at Howard.

This summer was the first year of our 4J Summer Reading Challenge in elementary schools. We partnered with the World Athletics Championships youth program and the Eugene Education Foundation to encourage students to read all summer long. Elementary students that participated logged their reading minutes in Beanstack. Thanks to the Eugene Education Foundation, the top six schools with the most minutes read (total school minutes divided by total student enrollment) earned books for their school library and the top twenty readers earned books for their teacher's classroom library.

Below are the top six schools in order.

5. Adams
6. Holt

The top individual student readers will be contacted via their school. Congratulations to all participants!

Help students learn how to search for and find books in the library. Show them this short tutorial on Destiny Discover and then provide them time to explore the tool. Students will need to know their 4J usernames and passwords to log in, but these can easily be printed out along with their Clever QR codes or separately on Avery labels. Check out Kellyclare Gardner's new tutorial on printing usernames and passwords. It's easy peasy! Once students learn to use Destiny Discover they can bring their devices with them to the library to search the catalog and find books they want to read for their reading pleasure or for research projects. Sora is where all students and teachers can access our district's digital library collection. This collection is filled with diverse, engaging, high-interest ebooks and audiobooks that can be accessed 24/7! Bookmark Sora for easy access all the time!

Please support students in accessing this awesome collection. There are books for all levels and interests. There's an incredible comics collection, high-interest diverse books, read-alongs for non-readers and so much more! The collection is curated into collections so readers can find what they're looking for. Students log in with their 4j username and password. K5 students will need to know this information. There is plenty to celebrate in September! From Dot Day on September 15th to Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th - October 15th there are resources to support all your explorations. And check out "Be Who You Are Day", a celebration of Todd Parr's awesome work! Have fun exploring the coding and virtual maker space boards too. You can find it all in the September Choice Board below. Have fun!

We have some pretty awesome resources that will support your students in inquiry and research that provide students with trustworthy places to start any research! Here is a link to our K5 and 6-8 choice boards that guide students through research and are filled with resources to get students started with research.

PebbleGO is a fantastic resource for K-2 learners to being research and explore a wide variety of topics. It's perfect for non-readers too, as all the articles have a read-aloud feature. Articles are organized in a way that makes accessing information easy. The monthly calendars highlight articles that tie into holidays and celebrations. Calendars can be found on the PebbleGo Website by clicking on Resources at the top and then selecting "Promotional Material" or clicking here for a direct link. Let's get our students connected with the Eugene Public Library! Not only do they have a huge selection of books, but their digital resources are abundant! Students (16 and older)/parents can call to get an "online use only" (OUO) card that will be good for one year or they can go in person to receive a full card and verify with student ID and parent signature (if 16 and under).
