Week 5
September 7 - September 11, 2026

Principal's Message
Childhood Cancer
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize children and families affected by cancer. I recently wore a pair of Nike shoes designed by a young cancer patient named Sophia, and our students enjoyed admiring the special details, including the pickles on the shoelaces! Her design sparked a wonderful conversation about how something as simple as a pair of shoes can tell a meaningful story. The kids had so many questions about Sophia. How old is she? Is she still in the hospital?
Doernbecher Freestyle Program, a partnership between Nike and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital gives young patients the opportunity to design their own footwear. This year they have selected 6 new patients. The shoes are sold to raise funds for the hospital, helping support care and research.
Hispanic Heritage
September is also Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a wonderful opportunity for our families to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. We encourage families to explore and learn together! Whatever your heritage is, talk with grandparents, relatives, and friends about your family’s history, cook a traditional meal, listen to music, read a book by to learn more about your roots. Every family has stories and traditions worth sharing, and this month is a great time to discover, celebrate, and add to our knowledge!
Special Shout-Out
Thank you to PTA and all of our scholars helping out on Back to School Night. Also thank you parents for supporting your scholars academic endeavors by participating in this important evening.
Kudos to our 8th and 5th grade helpers.

August Perfect Attendance
Top 4 Classes
These 4 amazing classes had ZERO absences and ZERO tardies for the month of August! WOWSER! Perfect Attendance students received a certificate, an August tag, and a Cougar dollar.
- Ms. Guerrero
- Ms. Gonzalez
- Ms. Diaz
- Ms. Muñoz
Here is a comparison of our attendance data from last August to this August. We currently have 11% of our students identified as chronically absent. While this is a concern, it is not too late to hit the RESET button! September is a brand-new month and a fresh opportunity for all of us to make a change.
Every school day matters! When students come to school every day and on time, they have more opportunities to learn, build relationships, participate in classroom activities, and stay on track academically. We encourage every family to make daily attendance a priority and to plan ahead to help their child be at school and ready to learn each day.
Let's make it a personal goal to have PROFICIENT to EXCELLENT attendance this school year. Together, we can make every day count!
Some Attendance Superstars!
College and Career Photos
Thank you families for supporting our mission for supporting students who will be college and career ready. These beautiful smiles are being printed on banners are will be hung inside our yard on PE hill.
Cougar Cash
How many cougar dollars do you have? Our Cougar Kiosk, a store with cool stuff to purchase with our Cougar Cash, will be opening at the end of the month.
Blackboard Connect
If you've opted out of the LAUSD messages (text, email, or phone) you will not get any Arroyo messages either. Unfortunately there isn't a feature to opt into Arroyo and opt out of LAUSD.
If you have not been getting our emails or text messages AND would like to, you can opt back in by calling 855-502-7867 for any phone number that was previously opted out. Parents can choose to opt back in to receive text messages by texting "START LAUSD" TO 91841.
We try to also provide updates on Class Dojo, however, that is not our official form of communication. When we have events like minimum days or early dismissal, I will usually send a text message through blackboard so it's immediate notification.
Parent Portal
Please Register!
We are excited to share that 91% of our parents have already registered! If you have not yet completed your registration, now is the time!
Please check your child’s backpack for the “How-To” guide we sent home on Thursday, 9/3. . The guide includes your child’s Student ID number and a unique PIN assigned specifically to you. Please remember that each parent/guardian has their own individual PIN, so both parents can register separately.
Don’t wait, register today! Your registration helps us strengthen communication and ensure that you have access to important information and resources throughout the school year. Let’s get to 100% parent registration!
Tuesday Morning Assembly
September 8, 2026
We are hosting a very special ASB Assembly on Tuesday morning so our school community can hear the wonderful speeches from our ASB candidates as they work hard to earn your votes for the cabinet positions they are running for!
Students in grades 4–8 will meet on the PE Hill at 8:00 a.m. to hear the final speeches, make their decisions, and cast their votes. We are excited to see our student leaders step up, share their ideas, and represent their classmates!
Meet the candidates!

Dress Code
Thank you for reviewing the dress code policy in its entirety. I do want to share that the dress code I posted in our handbook has been one that has been in effect at Arroyo Seco for the past few years. There were no new changes or additions to the policy. If there is anything specific you have a concern about, please kindly reach out and we can discuss your concern and any possible solutions you might have to offer. Thank you for your support in a successful year for the students, free of distractions.
Street/Parking Update
I met with a representative from the Councilmember’s Office, as well as a staff member from LADOT. We discussed two concerns:
1. RVs, homes, and transient encampments on our block
While the city ordinance states that vehicles of a certain size cannot park on the street between 2:00–6:00 a.m., we learned that once a vehicle is being used as a dwelling, that restriction does not apply.
2. Confusing signage and possible curb painting
We were advised to continue submitting concerns and/or emailing the appropriate departments. If the issue is escalated, there may be an opportunity to update the signage and/or redesignate certain sections of the street to make the parking restrictions clearer and more effective.

The SSC is the decision-making council for all programs funded through the Consolidated Application (Con Ap). The SSC is responsible for the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), in consultation with the English Learner Advisory Committee, other relevant stakeholders and, where applicable, the School Advisory Committee. The SSC is also responsible for meeting all school-level federal parental involvement mandates. Note that at Arroyo, we will not have an ELAC due to low EL numbers.
If you are interested in being part of SSC, you can complete the Self-Nominating Form and attend our Parent Elections on 9/10 at 3:30 p.m. https://forms.gle/cxqmFYBXrDkkubdQ7
Our orientation is at 8:30 am at the Parent Center or via Zoom.
The elections are at 3:30 pm at the Parent Center or via Zoom.
Please reach out to Ms. Maisterra should you have any questions.

Grades 7-8
Point Fermin Overnight Field Trip – Important Information
There will be a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, September 8 for all 7th and 8th grade students interested in attending the Point Fermin overnight field trip.
Completed packets from 8th grade students may be turned in September 9–11 to Mr. Mendez ONLY. Mr. Mendez will be greeting students as they arrive at school and will be available to receive completed packets. He will record the date and exact time each packet is received. Please do not give packets to any other staff member, as we want to ensure that all packets are properly time and date noted.
7th graders will have an opportunity to submit their completed packets beginning September 14th. Please note that during the week of September 14, all packets received—whether from 7th or 8th graders, will be time and date stamped in the same manner.
Our school nurse will review the submitted packets as appropriate.
Unfortunately, this year we were given a limited number of spaces because we will be attending camp with two other middle schools. We have been allotted 10 spaces for girls and 10 spaces for boys.
Camp Dates: October 9, 10, and 11 (Friday–Sunday)
