UCE Weekly Newsletter

A Message from Mrs. Klein
Greetings, UCE Families and Friends,
It was so wonderful to greet our Bearcats into the building this week- the smiles were endless!
Thank you to those families who made sure to have car rider nameplates to pick up your students. It really makes a difference with not only safety, but efficiency at car rider pick-up! If your child requires you to get out of the car to assist them with seatbelts/car seats, we ask that you please park and walk up to get your student. Additionally, any adult picking up a child that we do not immediately recognize who does not have a nameplate will be directed to check in at the office to verify identification and pick-up status. This is an absolutely necessary safety measure and must be followed. Our Bearcats' safety is our number one priority.
On August 28th and 29th, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wheeler High School. There will be special events at the football game on August 28th and a special celebration at Wheeler High School on August 29th at 10:00. We hope to see you there!
Our first UCE PTO meeting of the year will be next Tuesday, August 25th in our UCE Library at 5:30. We hope to see you there! We will be talking about our Fall Fest in October, along with other fun events. We are so fortunate to have a wonderful and supportive PTO who plans so many fun things for our Bearcats!
Also, next Thursday, August 27th will be our 5th grade orientation at 5:00 in the UCE Cafeteria,. Our 5th grade team will be talking about fun events for our 5th graders this year, and explain expectations. Our 5th grade is the only grade that switches classes, so this is a great way of learning what the expectations are so we can best prepare our 5th grade students for success as they work their way toward middle school.
You are loved at UCE,
Mrs. Klein

SEL Spotlight - Mrs. Parks
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the first SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) newsletter of the year! My name is Mrs. Parks, and I am your child's SEL teacher. I am beginning my 24th year of teaching, having taught in grades K, 3, and 5 at Union Center. This will be my second year teaching SEL at UCE and JSE. I look forward to another great year at both schools!
What to Expect in SEL Class:
Monthly Character Traits: The school's monthly character traits will be explored through engaging activities, games, books, and discussions.
Challenge Ed: Students will learn teamwork and collaboration through "Challenge Ed," designed to develop problem-solving skills.
Meet Cooper, Our Therapy Dog! We have planned a special collaboration with Mrs. Asher and Cooper, the school's therapy dog. Students will learn about therapy dogs, their training, and appropriate interactions.
This week's focus: The first class will center on understanding the role of a therapy dog and responsible interactions. After that we will focus on the August character trait of respect and to always do our personal best.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at jparks@union.k12.in.us. I look forward to another fantastic year!
Bus Conduct Agreement: Please Fill Out
Please click the button below to fill out the form for the Bus Conduct Agreement. Every student needs to have one filled out by a parent, regardless of how they go home, since buses are also used for field trips, Thank you!

Resources for Families After Storms
If these storms have taught us nothing, it has definitely revealed our dependence on the power grids for literally everything! Several families have lost all of their perishable food, so I wanted to provide a couple of resources that could be helpful:
- Link for Community Resources
- See flyer below for information regarding assistance with storm clean-up.
