The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
November 10-16, 2024
Good morning Cannon families,
We had a busy short week at Cannon! While our Cubs were away, our staff participated in professional learning to stretch their thinking and practice. I'm a little biased, but we have the BEST staff around! They are dedicated to our STEM mission to grow our scholars with skills for a lifetime - they LOVE our CUBS! Two of our STEMtastic Superstar Staff Spotlights include - Ms. Potter and Mrs. Morris! They've gone above and beyond to get to know and build Cannon community relationships, learn and apply STEM teaching and learning, and provide mentorship from their prior experiences. We are Cannon PROUD to have Ms. Potter and Mrs. Morris at Cannon!
This week, our second graders will honor our Veteran's at our annual performance on Monday at 2:00. We welcome all second grade families, and any Veterans from our community to join us as we honor their dedication, sacrifice, and service.
We also send our fifth graders to Van, Texas for three days and two nights to experience Sky Ranch Camp! This field trip tradition is my favorite. Our fifth graders will have so many wonderful stories and memories to share! Parents, make sure to read all information shared from teachers so that your Cubs are prepared. They will need to wear their "Cubs Out" or Red grade level spirit shirt on Monday as we arrive for our three day field trip experience. This helps us visually organize as we position ourselves at the campgrounds. This is a field trip, an extension of the school day, so we need all of our fifth grade Cubs ready and excited for this experiential learning experience. We are going to have a blast!
Next Friday, November 22nd we will host our traditional Cannon Grand Friend's Day from 8:30-10:25. We have several wonderful opportunities for our grand friends including our Art Show. Want a sneak peek? Check out this year's Kindergarten-5th grade Cannon Elementary Online Art Show beginning Nov. 15-24th here: Online Cannon Art Show Kindergarten-5th Grade . During Grandfriends Day the in person art show will be on display in the gym from 8:15-10:25.
After our PTA principal coffee last Friday, we received a wonderful surprise for our AMAZING Sargent Smith! We are extremely excited to share that "Officer Bobby", as our Cubs say, will be with us for the remainder of the school year. Again, I'm biased BUT we have the BEST at the BEST school around! A HUGE thank you to our parents for showering our phenomenal Student Resource Officer (SRO) with the LOVE and SUPPORT he so richly deserves!
Congratulations to our fifth and fourth grade STEM Habit of Mind Hall of Fame Inductees for Thoughtful Planning! STEM teaching and learning is an instructional approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM education practices, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, and critical analysis. We are PROUD to honor our scholars for exhibiting STEM thinking, and we can't wait to celebrate our next group of inductees this Friday.
Ms. Whitsell is looking for volunteers for the upcoming book fair! Our book fair will be taking place on November 18th-November 22nd. Please make sure that you have a completed background check before signing up! Here is the link to sign up to volunteer:

It's hard to believe but we only have two weeks until Thanksgiving break! With so much going on please remind your scholar(s) to continue to show Cub PRIDE (Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy) as we enter the festive and fun holiday season.
As a reminder, we do not have staff on duty in the front until 7:20 am. We definitely do not want anyone to get hurt! Please speak to your Cubs about not running and playing around the exterior of the building if you are dropping off early. Staff is present at 7:20, doors open at 7:25, and breakfast is served until 7:40 each morning. Thank you for your help reinforcing safety at Cannon at all times!
As always, thank you for your parent partnership!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett

GCISD Voters Approve VATRE; Generate $6 Million in Revenue for District
According to unofficial results from Tarrant County, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD voters have approved the school districtās Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election, listed as Proposition A on the ballot, with 57.9% of voters in favor and 42.1% against.
āFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you to our community for your ongoing support of our district,ā said Superintendent Dr. Brad Schnautz. āThis community is special. Iām incredibly honored to serve alongside our dedicated employees, proud of our talented students, and grateful to the fellow parents here, where we know all of our kids are receiving an amazing education. We look forward to continuing to provide a path of success for every student.ā
The passing of this proposition will provide approximately $6 million in much-needed funding for school district operations, including instruction, staff, extracurricular activities, transportation, maintenance and other daily operating expenses, excluding projects included in the recent bond. Bonds are paid for by a separate Interest & Sinking (I&S) fund, which is debt service. More details are available at GCISD.net/VATRE.
With approval of the VATRE, GCISDās maintenance and operations (M&O) tax rate will be $0.7369 per $100 appraised property valuation. This rate includes three āgolden pennies.ā One hundred percent of the tax funds collected through these additional three pennies will stay within GCISD and not be subject to recapture.
In August, the Board of Trustees approved a decrease of $0.0093 on the interest and sinking (I&S) rate, now at $0.1864, and a total tax rate of $0.9233. With this reduction by the Board, and the approval of the VATRE, the total tax rate is still $0.0014 less than the previous year. Over the last five years, the overall tax rate in GCISD has been reduced by 37.98 cents, is now the lowest it has been in more than 25 years and remains one of the lowest in the region.
āThank you to our entire community for recognizing the importance of GCISD schools and the contributions of every stakeholder that help us provide our students a high quality education,ā said Board President Shannon Braun. āThis shared commitment allows GCISD to thrive as a results-driven destination of distinction.ā
Approximately 41,485 GCISD residents voted on the districtās proposition. The GCISD Board of Trustees will canvas the votes at an upcoming meeting.

GCISD Holiday Greeting Card Art Contest
All elementary, middle, and high school students are invited to submit original artwork for the cover of GCISDās official holiday greeting card. This yearās theme is "Show Others Kindness." Three student designsāone each from the elementary, middle, and high school levelsāwill be selected and sent out on behalf of the GCISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Brad Schnautz. Cards are sent to community leaders, area businesses, organizations, and other school districts.
Each student will submit their artwork to their campus art teacher or other designee.
Each school will select campus-based winners whose art will then be submitted to the district level for final selection.
Each high school will choose up to 10 finalists; each middle school will choose up to 5 finalists; and each elementary will choose up to 3 finalists. Final designs for the cover will be selected by the Superintendent and his designees based on originality, the theme, use of the elements of art, and overall design.
