Policy Reminder: Feeding Policy
Feeding
Strive Center staff are aware that many children diagnosed with Autism struggle with feeding. We will make every effort to ensure that children eat independently at snacks and at lunch while in our care. We also understand that eating is a social activity in our society. Many children struggle with the social aspects of eating as well, and in order to create a positive environment and encourage healthy eating and social skills, we will adhere to the following guidelines:
- · SCA staff will work with Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, or Physical Therapists who are seeing a child on issues related to eating and feeding.
- · SCA staff will follow another therapist’s protocol related to feeding when doing so does not fall outside of our scope of practice and only with review by the BCBA assigned to the case.
- · SCA staff will encourage and reinforce independent eating behavior for all children. This means we will try to make sure that your child feeds himself whenever possible.
- · SCA staff will encourage and reinforce independent snack and lunch prep for all children. This means we will try to make sure your child gets out his own food, puts it on a plate if needed, and obtains his own utensils and napkins as needed.
- · SCA staff will encourage and reinforce independent snack and lunch clean up for all children. This means we will try to make sure your child clears his own place at the table, puts away his lunchbox, and throws away any trash. We will teach children to wash dishes when it is age appropriate. Children will always be supervised while washing dishes.
- · SCA staff will not withhold the foods you send for your child’s lunch. All food in the lunchbox will be offered at lunchtime.
- · SCA staff will not require a child to eat food in a particular order (i.e. a child will not be required to eat his entire sandwich before he can have his chips.)
- · Thirty minutes is allowed for eating lunch. When the allotted time is up, your child will clean up his lunch. Leftovers will be sent home when practical so that you will know what your child ate. Leftovers may be re-presented at snack time when practical.
- · SCA staff may assist in increasing the variety of foods your child will eat, but this will be done in conjunction with any other therapist on the case, and under the close supervision of the BCBA.
- · Because a food selectivity program is a specific program, we ask that parents send lunch and snack foods that you know your child is likely to eat. Please don’t send foods that your child dislikes without speaking to the BCBA on the case first.
- · A refrigerator and microwave are available for all children at SCA. All lunchboxes are kept in the refrigerator unless parents provide other instructions. Please make note of any foods that need to be heated.
- · SCA staff will heat food for children in the microwave, until your child is capable of using the microwave himself. Children will always be supervised while using the microwave. Your child’s BCBA will discuss microwave use with you prior to teaching your child.
