Course Description
Many writing exercises focus exclusively on improving the piece of writing, instead of improving the writer. The Writing Classroom focuses on implementing a writing workshop that provides students with consistent opportunities to engage in writing. By taking ownership of their writing work and their learning, students develop high levels of agency. The Writing Classroom gives students time and direction to reflect and grow their writing craft. The Writing Classroom series will support reflection and evaluation of your writing instruction to determine areas of strength and areas of improvement. You will explore and develop strategies for helping students succeed in every phase of writing, including prewriting, writing time, feedback, and sharing. In addition, you’ll learn to avoid common pitfalls that take away from students’ agency in their writing. Using research, strategies, and methods, you will be able to conduct a successful writing workshop that helps students grow as writers and develop a love of writing.
The Writing Classroom Series will use researched-based practices to explore the implementation of the writing workshop in 4 modules:
● Module 1: Essential Components: Culture, Structure and Routines
● Module 2: Mini-lessons with mentor texts
● Module 3: Conferencing
● Module 4: Small group instruction
