Weekly Newsletter Oct 3

October 2, 2025
A Message from our Principal
Dear Parents,
Next week are our first parent/teacher conferences of the year. These meetings are an essential time for teachers to share how your children are doing academically and socially here at school. Conferences are also a good opportunity for parents to share what they see at home. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure your children have a successful year.
For our middle school parents, conferences will be conducted in a round-robin style in the big gym. To ensure everyone gets a chance to meet with the teachers, please limit your time with each teacher to five minutes or less. We will be closing the gym from 5:30 to 6:00 for the teachers to have dinner. Please be mindful of this break, as any delay in the teachers' dinner may result in a delay in their return to the gym.
As a charter school, we set our academic calendar. Each year, the Board votes on the calendar for the upcoming year. There are three proposed calendars up for discussion this year. Calendar Option A has the same major breaks and end date as Douglas County, but with a slightly later start date. Calendar Option B has the same major breaks and a similar start date as Douglas County, with an earlier end date. Calendar Option C has a much later start date (after Labor Day), no fall break, and other breaks are the same as those of DCSD, with a mid-June end date. Please provide your feedback by October 10 using this survey.
The survey also has two additional questions. One question addresses an in-service day. There has been a request in the past to have an in-service day following winter break. All of these calendars move one of our August in-service days to January to accommodate that request. The other question asks about start dates.
I will share community and staff feedback with the Board at the October Board meeting. They will then vote on next year's calendar.
We hope to see you at FranklinFest on Saturday. Have a wonderful weekend.

GET TO KNOW YOUR BFA STAFF
We are starting a new section this year to help our BFA Community get to know our staff.
We asked our 5th Grade team what is something new they learned this past year.
Mrs. Calahan: This year, I’ve been learning about two very different things! At school, I’ve explored new AI tools that can support teaching and learning in creative ways. Outside of school, even though I’ve watched rugby for years, I’ve started learning more about the intricacies of the game and the strategies behind it. Both have reminded me that no matter the subject, there’s always something new to discover.
Mrs. McMahon: I am learning about Fat Bear Week, and I am having so much fun participating with my classes!

Carpool & PikMyKid
⚡ Lightning Delays ⚡
When we call a Lightning Delay, our team is actively monitoring the storm and will send updates about when carpool will proceed or if an alternate pickup plan is needed. Please still come to pick up your student as usual.
For safety, we will not begin carpool until lightning is more than 3 miles away. If it appears the storm will not clear within 10 minutes, we will notify parents to come into the building for student pickup. In this case, please park and walk to the main entrance. Parents will then be guided to homeroom classrooms to pick up students. If you are unsure of your child’s classroom, a staff member will be available in the front lobby to assist you.

It was inspiring to see our students so engaged and excited about reading and writing. BFA's Guiding Principles
Mission:
Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Vision:
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social emotional development, character, sports, and nature.
13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
