Tidbits from the President Tidbits from the President

I just got back from the annual FWQG retreat at Compass Centre. I’ve been going for several years now. Lots of fun, too much great food, lots of talking, maybe some sewing… I did manage to finish my brother’s HUGE t-shirt quilt and 2 table runners for the NTQF booth. I could have done more, but I loved getting to know members and visitors. I even managed to keep my fabric purchase to under $100 (rare self control). And, of course, I loved the weather, which was cold. This month’s program includes me as one of the presenters on “T-shirt Quilts”. So I will now shift my focus to writing it all down in a helpful manor. See you at the meeting. (and we will Zoom again for those who cannot be there in person, hopefully without the tech issues from last month).

Tight Knots

Tight Knots Bee- April Meeting

Our April meeting was hosted by Peggie Herring. As usual, we gossiped and spent time talking about our health issues. Cherie Bingham opened the meeting with show and tell with a quilt made from blocks our bee exchanged about four or five years ago. The blocks were for each month of the year and it had been so long no one could remember which block they made. She also showed us a small Americano quilt she made for a wheelchair patient at JPS. Cecilia Villa brought fabric she found at The Berry Patch in their rescue material. She is going to make the cute fabric into aprons for the guild booth at the annual quilt show this year. The theme for the booth is all kitchen things this year, so the aprons will be a good addition to the booth. Judi Janes made trivets for her guests at Easter dinner. These would be great for the guild booth. She also had a pattern for protectors to go between your pots and pans. Once again these would be perfect for the booth theme this year. Carolyn Hughes has all her pillowcases already made that are due in November for Safe Haven (overachiever). Pat Wagers presented two mystery quilts. One she started during covid. Chris Tomich made lots of hot pads and microwave bowls for the guild booth. We stopped the business meeting here for Cherry cobbler and ice cream. YUM! Thanks Peggie. We ended our afternoon with a fast-paced game of LRC for purple fat quarters. The game went back and forth till it was down to Pat Ford and Cecilia. Cecilia stole the fat quarters from Pat's, "Cold dead hands."

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Bev Ramsey Fund Bev Ramsey Fund

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

Quilts of Valor Quilts of Valor

Three completed quilts, a quilt top and several blocks were turned in at the March meeting. Keep them coming. You gals rock!

We’ve also had some outside help from volunteers in the community. Every stitch counts! We currently have seventeen nominations on our list. Five of those will be awarded before the end of April. The first is a WW11 veteran who served from 1944-1946. He will receive his on April 12th. The other four gentlemen will be receiving theirs on April 27th.

More kits and information will be available for members to pick up at the April meeting. I have backing fabric to go with the QOV quilt tops you make. Just let me know if you need some.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

Several quilts were collected in March. They will be delivered after the April guild meeting. Ten quilts were delivered in February. Keep up the good work fellow quilters.

NICU Co-Chairpersons

-------

We encourage each member to read the information below just to refresh your memory about all the items you can make for JPS. It’s not just NICU quilts. They love to get baby quilts of all sizes. The NICU quilts can’t contain flannel, but other quilts can. A new item added to the list is a wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Our donations are really appreciated by JPS, the moms, and any other patients who receive them.

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts -NO Flannel. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has also requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG or JPEG pictures. We can attach PDF, Word, and XL documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop).
