O'MaleyFamily FocusNovember 22, 2021

Dear O’Maley Families,

Our Project 351 Ambassador has been selected! Congratulations to Danna Rodriguez-Garcia! Project 351 is a statewide program with ambassador selection held annually. One student is selected from each of Massachusetts' 351 school districts. An Ambassador is an 8th grade student selected by educators in their community based on an exemplary ethic of service and the values of kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. A special premium is placed on the recognition of unsung heroes and quiet leaders. Ambassadors share a common passion for making a positive difference in their community and our world. Upon selection, they are invited to participate in 12 months of unique service and leadership development opportunities. The Ambassador's term spans from January of their 8th grade year through December of their 9th grade year.

First term report cards were published in the Schoolbrains Community Portal on Tuesday, November16th. Grades are the result of work completion, subject area mastery, effort and conduct. In the portal you may also view how your student is doing with regard to assignment completion and success. If you haven't yet viewed your student's report, or don't remember how, please scroll down for directions on Schoolbrains. If you have questions about the grades your child earned, please don't hesitate to contact the subject area teacher. While official conference days have passed, don't hesitate to reach out to an individual teacher or to the grade level guidance counselor to talk or to set up a meeting.

We ran our first ALICE safety drill last week, and everything went smoothly. Students barricaded or evacuated quickly, and the Gloucester Police Department praised student and staff response during the drill.

I had the good fortune to meet with students last week in the first round of Student Focus Groups. Students were invited to sign up to discuss topics in which they are interested, and are meeting with me over the course of several weeks. This is a short-term opportunity, unlike SAILS council which is a year-long commitment. Last week's topic was on our Advisory program, and some great ideas were generated about our bullying prevention lessons, educating our community on acceptance of differences, and ways to gather information from students about meaningful topics for Advisory in general. Groups will continue after Thanksgiving. Students who did not sign up and want to can email me their request.

Please read on and contact me at any time with questions or concerns.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and weekend!

Best,

Principal Lynne Beattie

Flue Vaccine for O'Maley Students

Every year at the beginning of the flu season, the Gloucester Department of Health and the Gloucester Public Schools provide in-school flu clinics to ensure that every school-aged child in Gloucester has the opportunity to receive the flu vaccine and to make getting the flu vaccine convenient for parents.

We will be hosting school-based flu vaccination clinics at each school. The flu vaccine will be offered free of charge and regardless of insurance status. Any student can be vaccinated with a parent’s permission.

This year, the influenza virus is expected to be circulating in Massachusetts throughout the fall, winter and spring. The flu can cause serious illness and can result in missed days of school as well as missed days of work for parents. Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially serious disease.

Registering Your Student for the Flu Vaccination Clinic

If you want your student to participate in the flu vaccination clinic please complete the online registration prior to the clinic date using this link below. You will need to select the correct school for each student that you register.

The Gloucester Public Health Department host our flu vaccination clinics at each school on the following dates and times:

11/23/2021 O'Maley Middle School 8:00 am -11:00 am

COVID-19 Updates & Weekly Testing Sign-Up

Please remind your child(ren) that masks are required on buses to and from school at all times.

COVID-19 at O'Maley: We had two new case of COVID-19 reported at O'Maley since our last update and currently have three active cases. All close contacts have been contacted. Since we started school August 31st there have been a total of 16 cases reported among the O'Maley community. See the new GPS COVID Dashboard for updated data each week: https://backtogether.gloucesterschools.com/updates/dashboard-covid-cases

Please remember to conduct a daily symptom check with your children. Link here for the daily symptom check information. Please be sure to call the nurses' office at 978-281-9847 if your child is experiencing any of the symptoms as described. Our nurses, Kim Cameron and Alycia Gossom can answer questions and will guide you as to what you need to do related to testing and/or documentation from your child's doctor. Students must not come to school with symptoms.

As we head toward the holiday season, please be aware of the COVID-19 Travel Guidelines. Link here for information on what is needed to return to school following travel.

To Sign Up for Weekly Testing: Link here: https://www.cic-health.com/consent/ma?district=Gloucester.I encourage families to sign their children up to be tested. Individuals signed up to participate last year DO need to re-register. Parents/Guardians MUST complete the form to give permission in order for a student to be tested.

Masks & Distancing: Per the Massachusetts DESE and the Gloucester School Committee, all students and staff will be masked in GPS buildings except at lunch or mask break when they are socially distanced at 3 feet or more. Per DESE, masks are required in public schools until at least January 15, 2022. Masks are not required outdoors. For details on our health and safety protocols district wide, please visit the GPS COVID Guidance and Updates website at https://backtogether.gloucesterschools.com/.

Students must bring their own masks to school each day. While we all wish we did not have to wear them, masks continue to be required indoors at school. Thank you!

The Schoolbrains Community Portal & Report Cards

To conserve paper, and to ensure that families have access to student performance information, report cards are not printed or sent home as a hard copy. Report cards for Term 1will be accessible in the Schoolbrains Community Portal at approximately 3:00 p.m. on November 16th.

Our Portal is open for all students and families, and parents/guardians who are new to the portal should have received an email containing your login information. If you did not receive an email, or already had one and have forgotten it, please email Mr. Destino, jdestino@gloucesterschools.com or Mr. Hurley, dhurley@gloucesterschools.com and they will send it to you.

Information about the portal, what you will find there, and how to login is below.
