MOY Assessments continue
Laser-focused on LEARNING
We are in the middle of doing Middle of the Year (MOY) assessments through mClass (Reading), and iReady (Math & Reading). This week, students will complete their Reading iReady MOY. Later in February, we have additional progress monitoring assessments including the CoGat (2nd grade), NC Check-Ins (Gr3-5), and ACCESS (multi-language learners).
One of the biggest challenges has been with laptops either left at home, missing, or damaged. Students MUST take care of and bring their school-assigned laptops. Our new media coordinator (Kimberly Fuller) conducting an audit of our laptops, chargers, and library books and will be reaching out to students and their families to recover missing items. Please be on the lookout for such communications from Ms. Fuller or your child's teacher.
The initial MOY results indicate that most of our students are making progress; however, many need to be much more focused on their learning both at school and at home (homework, review). In particular, students need a lot more practice in reading and reading comprehension. One of the most powerful ways that families can help in this process is to have your students read aloud to a family member and/or read to them and discuss what was read. Other ways to support reading practice at home are by taking your children to the Perry Memorial Library or visiting a local museum or bookstore.
Other ways that families support their child's learning are by...
- Getting your children to school on time every day
- Making sure absent students make up missed work
- Signing up for Parent Portal to monitor grades and attendance
- Creating an evening routine that supports learning (e.g. homework/review time, early bedtime, limited electronics)
- Partnering with your child's teacher through Class Dojo, email, and other forms of two-way communication
- Asking your teacher about ways to support learning at home

Community Read Aloud at Perry Memorial Library
New program on Mondays from 5:30pm-6:15pm, starting January 22nd. It is called "Community Read Aloud" and the idea is that youth will have a chance to read to a volunteer with the National Honor Society Students from the Vance County Early College High School. There is no registration required but folks can let me know they are coming by emailing mpeters@perrylibrary.org. We are hoping to foster the love of reading and support an encouraging environment for learning and reading out loud as everyone gets a chance to listen to themselves and others read.
