Principal's Hello Principal's Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Honestly, the building gets boring during the summer. It's too quiet and empty! Not any more! We're back in business, and our students brought the joy this week! We're now enrolled at over 600 students, and the energy is awesome.

We hope your student's first couple days were fun, engaging, and friendly. We work hard to create a warm environment. Please offer your feedback any time—we're always looking to improve our service!

Have a great weekend!

Sean

Just a reminder, the use of e-bikes and e-scooters on all Bend-La Pine school campuses for any student under 16 years of age is prohibited.

Pacific Crest will enforce the regulation throughout the school year. Students will first be warned and parents contacted. After the first warning, we will hold the bike at school and only release the bike to the parent.

We will be distributing iPads to all students the week of September 14-18 in students’ math class.

  • Monday 9/14 - 8th Grade

  • Tuesday 9/15 - 7th Grade

  • Wednesday 9/16 (make-ups for 8th/7th)

  • Thursday 9/17 - 6th Grade

  • Friday 9/18 - (any remaining make-ups)

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, middle school student iPads will remain at school.

This change reflects the district's commitment to using technology intentionally during the instructional day while encouraging balanced learning experiences outside of school. Students will continue to be assigned an individual iPad for use throughout the school day; however, district-issued devices are no longer considered take-home devices.

Students will learn the routine of racking their iPads in their 7th period classes on an iPad charging cart. Teachers will ensure iPads are turned in each day and charged for students to use the next. When students arrive at school the next day, between 8:40 and 8:50, students will be able to pick up their iPads from their 7th period class and get to their Advisory (or 1st period on Wednesdays) in time to begin their school day.

We will continue to ensure each student has access to a rich educational experience with their assigned iPad that supports their learning during the school day. Teachers will use digital instruction intentionally in a way that enriches their content and curriculum.

Homework & iPad Expectations

Homework will be designed so students can complete required work without a district device or home internet access.

Families can expect homework to focus on activities such as reading, writing, studying, practice, reflection, and long-term projects with non-digital options when needed. If digital work is essential, students should have adequate time to complete it during the school day.

Taking an iPad home will be limited to specific educational needs, such as documented student support plans, extended medical absences, approved Bend-La Pine Online coursework, or other special circumstances.

Unfinished classwork, routine studying, preference for digital work, or regularly assigned digital homework are not typically reasons for an iPad to go home. Students will have Study Hall opportunities during advisory on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If your student has a special circumstance or you have questions about access, please connect with your student’s counselor, teacher, or administrator so we can work together to determine the appropriate support.

Should I Purchase iPad Insurance if iPads Aren't Coming Home?!? Should I Purchase iPad Insurance if iPads Aren't Coming Home?!?

YES! We strongly recommend that every family purchase iPad insurance. The majority of iPad damage occurs on campus and insurance is a good way to protect your family from unexpected repair or replacement costs.

**Insurance protects against unexpected damage and certain major incidents.
It does not cover damage caused by misuse, neglect, or missing accessories.

Optional annual iPad insurance is $30 per student, with a family cap of $60.

Insurance can be purchased online through September 30th. After this period, iPads must be inspected at the school for damage before insurance can be purchased.

Canvas: What is It? Canvas: What is It?

Canvas - Canvas is the digital space for classes at PCMS. Teachers post weekly agendas, digital resources, and collect digital samples of work. Students access Canvas on their iPads at school.

Students will receive direct, supported guidance of how to interact with Canvas.

Keep an eye in the News from the Nest for more information about becoming a Canvas Observer, which allows linked family member accounts to see their student’s Canvas courses.

StudentVue/ParentVue - StudentVue/ParentVUE is the place to check students’ grades for each class and many other things including attendance records, report cards, IEP progress reports, and current schedules.

StudentVue/ParentVue has been upgraded recently to present graded information very clearly. For more information about logging in follow this link.

Helping Your Student Access Canvas at Home Helping Your Student Access Canvas at Home

As you are all aware, iPads will not be going home with your student. That requirement means that students will NOT need to access Canvas while at home.

If you would like to access this on a personal device at home, please refer to the attached guide, available in both English and Spanish.

Our recommendation is that your student either sends the verification to a guardian's phone number OR if they have a phone they will use while at home, set things up under counselor or office staff supervision.

To be clear, after the initial verification is done, they no longer need their school iPad to access at home, meaning this is a one-and-done process.

Forgotten Items & Daily Deliveries Forgotten Items & Daily Deliveries

As we get ready to start the new school year, we wanted to share a quick reminder about how we handle items that are forgotten at home or need to be delivered to students during the school day.

We know that mornings can be busy, and occasionally a student may forget something they need. However, a high volume of deliveries can quickly overwhelm our front office staff.

Please help us by reminding your student to bring everything they will need for the school day and after-school activities when they leave home each morning.

If Your Student Needs Something During the School Day If Your Student Needs Something During the School Day

If your student truly needs an item delivered during the school day, they may come to the Attendance Office and use the school phone to contact you and request it. Students are also expected to use the Attendance Office phone to call home if they are ill.

PLEASE NOTE: Students will receive a technology violation for texting or calling home about a forgotten item during the school day or for using their cell phone to report that they are sick.

Once an item has been dropped off:

  • The item will be placed on a cart in the front office.
  • Students may pick up their items during passing periods or after school.

Food & Beverage Deliveries Food & Beverage Deliveries

We will not accept food or beverage deliveries from DoorDash, Uber Eats, or similar services. These deliveries will be turned away.

Thank you for helping us establish these expectations from the start of the school year. Your cooperation helps keep our front office running smoothly and allows our staff to focus on supporting students throughout the day.

We appreciate your help!

Have you noticed that your student loves cologne or perfume?

Please do us a favor and ask your student to limit the amount of fragrance they're wearing at school. Cologne or perfume can be a distraction to learning and can even affect those with chemical sensitivities. Fragrances can exacerbate allergies and asthma symptoms and can even cause migraines.

Thanks for understanding!
