Principal's Message

As this first quarter closed in October, it was, and is, a great fall. Honor Roll numbers were outstanding with over 34% of all EC students earning straight As and over 63% earning all As and Bs!

FFA competed in the State Horticulture competition at Purdue. And, our two state qualifying teams finished 9th and 25th, respectively. At the Versailles Pumpkin Show we swept both King and Queen as ECs own Callie Bentley and Tyler Stenger took both crowns.

Fall sports teams were very successful. With Rowan Pies advancing to state for the third year in a row after winning conference and sectional again this year. Girls soccer won another sectional title before losing in the elite 8. Girls XC advanced to the regional for the 4th straight year, and Callie Bentley advanced to the State Championships for the 4th consecutive year as well! Finally, football continues to roll now 8-2 on the season heading into the sectional final vs Whiteland this weekend.

A big congratulations to Band finishing in the top 3 at every marching competition this fall and qualifying for state for the first in three years earning the right to compete at Franklin Central High School on October 25th with the best bands on the state.

The building project continues to move forward with the opening of the North parking lot and the newer safer student drop-off/pick up lanes. I’d like to share a big thank you to students, staff, and parents for your flexibility and patience through the fall. Our new Trojan Cafe and library spaces will be opening soon (in December and in January)! Exciting times here at ECHS!

Academic success resources available to ECHS students:

1. Student-Teacher Communication:

If your child has questions or is not understanding class material, please encourage discussions with the classroom teacher. A follow-up email from you to the teacher is always appreciated! This ensures that a conversation between the child and teacher is happening.

2. Parent-Teacher Communication:

  • We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions about a class, please do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher. If you are emailing a teacher, it is also helpful to cc your child's school counselor. Teachers can give you specific insights related to your child (i.e. organization, helpful study techniques, web resources, etc.). Teacher and Counselor email addresses are available on the school website: http://echs.sunmandearborn.k12.in.us/.

  • Power School: Updated grades are viewable via the parent portal of Power School. Checking specific grades will help you understand how the final grade is being calculated. If you need your Power School information, please contact the office at 812-576-4811 x11915.

3. Extra Assistance Before or After School:

  • Students should check with their teachers if they feel extra assistance is needed. Teachers arrive daily at 7:30 and could possibly help before or after school.

  • If students have a study hall, students can ask their counselor to set up peer tutoring 2-3 days a week during that time. In addition, our study hall monitor, Mrs. Marmouze is willing to do "Grade Checks" with students.

4. Online Resources:

Each subject has specific tools and resources available to students. Each course has a Google Classroom set up by the teacher. If you would like access, you may reach out to the classroom teacher. In addition, students report high success with the use of KhanAcademy.org (completely free online educational videos in all core classes) and AskRose.org (offers free homework help in math and science).

Education is a team effort! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Student of the Month

Congratulations to our Senior Student of the Month, Paige Hotze!

Paige, daughter of Kevin and Brandy Hotze, has an outstanding cumulative GPA of 4.275. She is a true leader, serving as Vice President of both the Student Council and National Honor Society. Paige also leads as President of the Spanish Club and The Shield Club.

In addition to her leadership roles, Paige shines on the softball field and has earned a place on the exemplary honor roll every semester throughout high school. She generously gives her time volunteering at the public library and tutoring middle school students. Student Council Sponsor, Mrs. Ketcham, shared, “We are so grateful for the leadership of our Student Council Vice President, Paige. Paige is a hardworking and determined student who leads with quiet confidence and strength. She sets an incredible example for her peers through her dedication, intelligence, and steady presence. Though she leads without seeking the spotlight, her impact is felt in everything Student Council accomplishes. Student of the Month

East Central High School is excited to recognize senior Tyler Stenger as our Student of the Month! Tyler, the son of Jeremy and Maureen Stenger, is a remarkable student, leader, and role model for his peers. With an impressive 4.122 GPA, Tyler will graduate this spring not only with his high school diploma but also with his Associate Degree!

Tyler’s leadership is seen everywhere at ECHS and in the community. He currently serves as President of FFA, Student Council, and National Honor Society, founded the SALT Team, and co-founded The SHIELD. He is also active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Trojan Young Life, the Dearborn County Farm Bureau, and is a 10-year 4-H member. Beyond school, he represents his peers as a Dearborn County Youth Ambassador and member of the IHSAA Student Advisory Committee.

As a two-sport varsity athlete, Tyler has earned recognition as a conference and sectional champion in wrestling and a state qualifier in the pole vault. This year, he was also honored as the 2025 Pumpkin Show King. Tyler has been on the Exemplary Honor Roll every semester, was awarded the prestigious ECHS Academic Jacket.

Service is just as important to Tyler as academics and athletics. He donates farm-fresh eggs to local food pantries, volunteers with the Freestore Foodbank, and lends a hand at Dearborn County Ag Day. In his free time, he enjoys raising livestock, gardening, cooking, exercising, and—of course—leading others.

Looking ahead, Tyler hopes to attend Purdue University to double major in Agricultural Economics and Political Science. He is quick to thank his family, saying: “I would like to thank my family for always pushing me to be the best and supporting me along the way.”He also shares this advice with his classmates:“Make the most of high school and soak it all in because it sure does go by fast!”

Congratulations, Tyler! Your hard work, leadership, and heart for service make ECHS proud!

East Central’s Student Council worked tirelessly to make this year’s Homecoming Week a tremendous success. The week was filled with school spirit, from creative dress-up days to lunch games that showcased Trojan pride. The pep rally brought the entire student body together in an atmosphere that was truly electric. Students and staff alike joined in the excitement, celebrating our teams and our school community. We are proud to congratulate our Homecoming royalty: Prince Solomon Wheat, Princess Gabby Cleary, King Gavin Osterman, and Queen Paxten Feller. The celebration concluded with a Homecoming dance that welcomed nearly 400 students for an evening of fun, music, and memories. It was a wonderful week that reflected the dedication of our Student Council, the enthusiasm of our students, and the support of our East Central community. A special thank-you goes out to the staff, parents, and volunteers who helped make each event possible. Your time, energy, and encouragement made all the difference in creating a memorable Homecoming for our students.

In the beginning of October, three students attended the FCS Teacher Education Day at Purdue. They were able to tour the Culinary labs and the Child Care Facility in addition to some seminar spaces. This tour expanded their college options.

Over 100 FCCLA and FFA Members enjoyed an evening of fall fun, food and laughter with the annual hayride around the Blue Creek area. The members enjoyed grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, potato chips and cookies. We would like to thank the Tyler Stenger and his family for hosting our event this year!

Our 3rd annual Dip Night was held at our Oct. 21st FCCLA Chapter Meeting. We had over 30 dips shared! Our members really enjoy this meeting. The winners of the dip night were Macy Lyness for her Skyline Chili Dip and Addison Quinn for her Strawberry Cheesecake Dip.

Tatum Johnson, representing the East Central High School FCCLA Chapter in St. Leon, Indiana, recently participated in the exclusive “Day in the Life of a Marriott General Manager” program in Orlando, Florida, an invaluable experience coinciding with the FCCLA Fall Leadership Institute. Shadowing a general manager across iconic properties like the Orlando World Center Marriott, Tatum gained a rare, insider's perspective on leading a premier hospitality resort. Her favorite part was getting to see the behind-the-scenes operation of a restaurant's successful buffet, which illuminated how "all other parts of the hotel contribute to the success of the overall general operation." For Tatum, who is active in Culinary Arts and Fashion and Design classes, the experience was a profound success that not only offered career-connected learning but also solidified her goal: "This experience solidified that I want to pursue Hospitality as a major."

On October 25th, the Sunman Open Door Food Pantry Ribbon Cutting marks the official opening of a community-centered "give and take" pantry. The project was a collaborative effort, stemming from an idea by East Central FCCLA graduates Kayla and Layla Craig, and the building was successfully constructed by the East Central FFA. The pantry's vision is to provide a space where individuals and families, particularly those facing food insecurity and lack of reliable transportation in Sunman, can access nutritious food and essential supplies. Located in a well-lit, accessible area, the pantry is intended to be available at any time of day, ensuring safety and comfort for those who visit. During the ceremony, attendees were invited to help sustain the pantry's work by donating non-perishable food items, gently used coats, hats, and gloves, or by spreading the word about the opportunity to give. The continued operation of the pantry is overseen by students, with support from the FCCLA advisor, Brenda Osman.

On October 28th, the residents at North Dearborn Village enjoyed a festive and collaborative evening of pumpkin carving, thanks to the help of over 30 East Central FCCLA members. This wonderful intergenerational event brought together the students and seniors to transform pumpkins into glowing jack-o'-lanterns, with the atmosphere filled with laughter, shared stories, and creative energy. After the carving was complete, everyone celebrated with a delicious dinner of pizza, followed by a sweet selection of homemade desserts. Guests could choose between brownies and ice cream or a classic warm apple crisp and ice cream, making for a memorable and fun celebration that fostered strong community bonds.

November 20th-Chapter Meeting & Square Dance Night

December 4th-Girls’ Night

Agriculture Agriculture

ECHS Staff and Students,

In March of this year East Central FFA members spent the Monday of their spring break volunteering at Gorman Heritage Farm in Evendale, Ohio.

Gorman is a non-profit educational farm that works to educate the community at large about agriculture. The farm is located right in the heart of Evendale on Reading Road about 30 minutes from ECHS.

One of their largest fund-raising events is their annual Sunflower Festival. They expressed a need for portable seating to be used at various locations around the farm during this event.

Supervised Agricultural Experience students Jacob Boehringer, Troy Randolph and Tyler Stenger were tasked with building 10 benches. These young men just finished them, and Mr. Johnson delivered them to the farm. Benches were donated to the farm.

Maybe we'll see you at the Sunflower Festival.

Digital Photography

On September 29, Mrs. Gulasy’s Digital Photography Classes had an amazing learning opportunity to go on a field trip to downtown Lawrenceburg, Indiana where they participated on a “photo walk” with photographer, AJ Waltz. The students met up at Ivy Tech and AJ taught the students how to hold a camera, getting the best results with your camera gear, safety on location, creating properly exposed photos, focal lengths, and different camera modes. Afterwards the students ventured out all over Lawrenceburg where he created a map and each location on the photo walk, they would be given a “break out session” and asked to create a photograph with certain criteria within 5 to 10 mins.

Welcome to Computing Foundations for a Digital Age

This year, all East Central sophomores are taking Computing Foundations for a Digital Age as part of their graduation requirements. The course is designed to give students a strong foundation in computer science by exploring five major areas: computing systems, networks and the internet, data and analysis, algorithms and planning, and the impacts of computing on society.

So far, students have been diving into problem-solving with AI, learning the fundamentals of computational thinking, and exploring the basics of computer programming. These skills not only introduce them to the world of computer science but also strengthen their critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities—skills that will serve them well in any career path.

As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, this course equips students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate our digital world while preparing them for success in college, careers, and beyond.

The Aerospace class has carried out a number of different projects including designing and modeling Long distance gliders. This project required the students to design a glider on a software called AERY 32, then take those plans and create the parts of the glider on Inventor and then finally laser engrave the parts out. After they had the parts they then had to sand the wings and stabilizers to make them more aerodynamic. We will spend next week testing documenting results and making adjustments to the gliders.

The Computer Aided Design class has been working on multiple parts and projects on Inventor throughout the month. One of the projects was to model a toy front end loader on Inventor and assemble it. One of my groups then 3D printed it out and put it together to be able to use as an example. Another project that we just started is an Automoblox project where the students have to use dial calipers to find measurements of a car and then recreate the parts on Inventor.

English English

September was a busy and exciting month in our English classrooms!

Mrs. Jansing’s freshmen dove into The Contender, a novel that challenges readers to “get in the fight” and contend with life’s battles. Mrs. Tucker’s students practiced partner reading through CommonLit, while Ms. Huber’s and Ms. Stanley's classes read Of Mice and Men and are eager to watch the film adaptation after fall break. Sophomores in Mr. Meiners’ classes explored Coming of Age stories and connected those themes to their own lives through personal narratives, and Mrs. Cecil’s students brought 12 Angry Men to life in a lively mock trial. Honors English 10 students with Ms. Jackson and Mrs. Trossman wrapped up mythology studies, practiced reasoning strategies, and even held a fun spelling bee. Seniors in Mr. Whalbring’s classes studied Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, while also reflecting on their own experiences in memoir essays. English 11 in Ms. Stanley's room just finished up analyzing the Declaration of Independence and are now moving on to the roaring 20s where they will read F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. In Honors English 12, Mrs. Ketcham’s students read Beowulf while experiencing an Anglo-Saxon mead hall and crafting their own epic “boasts” as they discussed how literature reflects cultural values. In AP Literature & Composition, students have been sharpening their writing and analysis skills while reading Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. Meanwhile, our dual-credit courses kept students busy with textual analyses, literary essays, and Media Review Speeches, all designed to build strong college-level skills. From vocabulary training and group reading to classic texts, film studies, and research projects, September was full of meaningful learning, critical thinking, and creative expression in English.

Advanced Fashion & Textiles-The Advanced Fashion Students just finished making teddy bears to practice more intricate seams. They are now beginning to make weighted vests for the Occupational Therapy program here at Sunman Dearborn.

Advanced Nutrition

Students in Advanced Nutrition and Wellness finished reviewing MyPlate Guidelines and the different food groups and began to look at the essential nutrients. Students made breakfast burritos, overnight oatmeal, homemade applesauce, applesauce cake, and more in order to explore the different food groups and how healthy meals can be made using a variety of foods.

Education Capstone-( EDUC 230)- Introduction to Special Education-The second year Education students are analyzing different types of classroom management strategies to determine how they will operate their future classroom. They provide great assistance to the classroom they are helping in.

Introduction to Culinary Arts- The Intro to Culinary Arts students have been learning about how to properly read and follow a recipe. They also learned common cooking terms often used in recipes in order to make recipes successfully. They practiced these techniques & procedures in the lab making a Chicken Alfredo dish. Next students learned the essential parts of a well-written recipe and again practiced reading and following the recipe to make Mini Muffins and Pancakes. In November we will continue to practice these skills and focus on Changes Recipes and why one would want to change a recipe & how to do this successfully.

Introduction to Fashion & Textiles-

Students have been practicing using sewing machines to create curved seams. This skill will be vital for sewing garments, like their upcoming pajama pants projects. In order to practice these curved seams, students made fabric pumpkins and decorated them with twine, rafia, fake leaves, and stems.

Principles of Fashion & Design- We continue to learn the “language of sewing” by learning the pattern symbols used in sewing. We are now cutting out our PJ Pants so that we can practice creating a basic clothing item.

Principles of Human Services

We continue to learn and practice the skills vital for working in the Human Services Pathway. Students were able to practice problem solving skills during class activities and began the process of planning a community service project as a team. We are also exploring ethical decision-making through work-based scenarios and classroom discussions.

Principles of Teaching-EDUC 101-The first year cadet teachers are doing a great job assisting in their classrooms at the elementary and middle schools. Currently in class, we are studying the history of education. Public education has come a long way since the colonial days.

ProStart 1- The ProStart 1 students are working through the ServSafe food safety course, focusing on how to keep food safe in the foodservice industry. Students apply these principles in the culinary lab making various dishes throughout the chapters.

ProStart 2- The ProStart 2 students wrapped up their Ivy Tech Course Hospitality 103: Soups, Stocks, & Sauces at the end of October. Students learned how to fabricate a chicken and then made their own Chicken Stock. We used this chicken stock throughout the Sauce & Soup units to create many delicious dishes. The ProStart 2 students also made and donated 6 delicious pies to the St. Leon Legion for their Oktoberfest Pie Auction.

Pro1 & 2- In October both ProStart classes made baked goods and entered them into the Aurora Farmers Fair Baked Goods Competition! Also you can follow the EC Culinary classes and all of our adventures on Facebook at East Central High School Culinary Arts.
