Welcome Back!
Greetings University Schools,
Welcome to the first issue of the Compendium Digest for the 2023-24 school year! This monthly
newsletter will feature highlights, updates, and information across all four of our schools.
We have officially been in school now for over a month, and during that time we have welcomed new and returning students, added 10th grade to our growing high school, moved our UHS students into their new space on the 4th floor at Orgel Educational Center, and celebrated all of the amazing things about being a Tiger!
During all of the transitions, we are most thankful for our families and students! Thank you for your partnership, and we look forward to celebrating our students' successes all year!
UofM’s University Schools Awarded Semi-Finalist Status in Department of Education Challenge
We are so proud to announce that University Schools were recently announced as the only schools in West TN to advance as semi-finalists in the Department of Education's Career Z Challenge.
The challenge received submissions from schools in 35 states proposing innovative solutions to expanding high school student access to high-quality work-based learning and career preparation experiences. University Schools were selected alongside two other schools in Tennessee and 80 other finalists spanning the nation.
The Career Z Challenge supports the Raise the Bar: Unlocking Career Success initiative championed by the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, and Commerce. Through the Career Z Challenge, University Schools will engage collaborative ecosystems of educators, employers, industries and community stakeholders to ensure educational offerings are aligned with local and state workforce and post-secondary needs. Additionally, University Schools will serve as a training and laboratory model for engaging students across grades 9-12 in meaningful career exploration, development and preparation by providing experiential learning opportunities that are real-world, relevant, inclusive and accessible, interconnected and expansive, scalable, measurable and sustainable.

ELRC (PreK)
Embracing the New School Year!
We are so excited to welcome everyone back, especially our Director Brooke Willis! She came back in full swing, starting with the ELRC PD Week. We spent the week preparing for the school year and our first big event, Parent Orientation. Before welcoming in parents, staff gathered to take the annual ELRC photo. During orientation, parents and guardians are invited to the school and introduced to the teachers and classrooms. This is one of many parent events to come as we continue to build a strong connection between parents and the ELRC.
These first couple of weeks, everyone is getting to know each other. In Mrs. Anna Grace’s 3-year-old class, they read the book “I Like Myself” by Karen Beaumont. Each student was introduced to their peers and shared what they like about themselves. The responses are displayed outside of her classroom giving the opportunity for everyone to get to know the class. Through sharing their favorite aspects about themselves, the students are encouraged to embrace their individuality, confidence, self-love, and empathy while learning about themselves and their classmates.
Similarly, in Ms. Erin’s 4-year-old class, each student was assigned a day to present a poster about themselves. Through these posters, all students learn about each other and their interests. After presenting, the posters are posted in the classroom for all students to revisit and continue to have conversations surrounding the topics presented.
Throughout the school year, we want to continue to promote a positive and inclusive learning environment. With a range of welcoming events and activities, the ELRC staff are setting the stage for a successful year filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable memories.
Campus School (K-5th Grade)
‘Hopes and Dreams"
“What are your hopes and dreams for the school year?” All Campus School teachers ask this question during the first week of school to help students get excited about learning and make a personal connection to what they will learn in school. Inviting students to name learning goals (hopes and dreams) right away shows them that Campus School is a safe place and that students are important members of the classroom. It also shows students that they can look forward to an engaging, challenging, and fun year of growth and learning. This is part of the Responsive Classroom model that Campus School has adopted for years. This activity varies per grade-level. Some grades opted to have students complete their hopes and dreams on a cloud-shaped paper to display. While all of the hopes and dreams may look different, the intentionality and themes are alike. Teachers use students’ hopes and dreams as a reminder throughout the school year for the students of their dreams and to instill the mindset that anything is possible.
Highly Effective Teaching
“The Highly Effective Teaching model is a brain-compatible model grounded in the biology of learning, effective instructional strategies, and the development of conceptual curriculum. The HET Model has been successfully replicated nationally in educational institutions serving rural, urban, and suburban communities. It includes proven strategies and methods for student learning, teaching and administrative management. Independent research has provided evidence of significant gains in student achievement using the Highly Effective Teaching Model.
The HET model is implemented at Campus School. There are several components that make for an HET classroom. Here are some of the components: Creating the conditions for a learning environment before school starts; Implementing resources for a body-brain-compatible environment throughout the year; Classroom resources include neuroscience and the Biology of Learning, mindful and intentional materials are used for building community, Classroom management through the Lifelong Guidelines and LIFESKILLS, Intentional instructional strategies are used for engaging students, and instructors create and use Conceptual Curriculum which integrates subject areas.
Teachers devoted time during in-service to “Quality Classrooms”. This includes analyzing classroom practices and set-up to ensure model HET status- such as utilizing natural lighting, incorporating plants, and calming colors. Campus School classrooms have the “living room” approach, where students feel like they are at home in their classrooms. When it comes to setting up classrooms, everything is on purpose.
UofM STEM Pipeline Partners
The University of Memphis is piloting the STEM Pipeline Partners Program led by Dr. Carl Herickhoff. The program’s goal is to pair STEM professors with K-12 teachers. The program was open to all teachers and faculty. Three teachers from Campus School were selected to participate: Jodie Friedman, Patricia Mendez, and Betsy Pillow. The open call for participants started in April of 2023. Over the summer, organizers worked diligently to appropriately match educators with community partners. On August 22, educators and faculty gathered at the College of Engineering for the U of M Pipeline Partners Kick-off. Campus School teachers had the opportunity to plan for the school year with their assigned University partner and create meaningful opportunities for STEM outreach on campus. The cohort will meet continuously throughout the school year. Campus School teachers are thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the university in the pilot year of this program. Wonderful opportunities are sure to come of the partnerships being built across the city.
Uniform Drive
Campus School parents are leading the way to create sustainable opportunities for Campus School Tigers! During the last week of August, the school hosted a parent-run uniform drive. Families had the option to donate gently-used basic uniform clothing andCampus School logo clothing. Parents then sorted clothing and organized distribution of items. Spearheaded by Kindergarten and third-grade parent Stephy Momper, our Tigers are making an impact by decreasing textile waste, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions through these upcycling efforts.
University Middle School (6th Grade - 8th Grade)

University High School (9th Grade)
Orgel Educational Center
Last week, we welcomed both 9th and 10th grade into their space on the fourth floor at Orgel Educational Center. It's been quite a journey as students navigated a temporary space for the first few weeks of school, but now our students officially have a home!
Fall 2023 Extended Learning
Welcome back to the Extended Learning Programs at University Schools! We are excited to have you back this semester and the improvements we implemented! We had a historic record of 845 registrations at Campus School, University Middle School & University High School, and we look forward to growing the number of quality programs.
This growth in enrollment implied several challenges with our rostering. Please know that we are currently exploring some options to make this process easier for everyone!
This semester we established 3 major changes:
We implemented the same start & end times for the semester for EL Programs and we will try to keep this from now on.
We now have the same dismissal time/process for all students at Campus (4:20 p.m.) and at Orgel Educational Center for UMS/UHS (4:40 p.m.).
We added a second round of bus transportation after EL Programs for the Campus School - St. Luke Challengers program.
We are currently in the process of:
Improving the overseeing process for every EL and Y-Care.
Improving the registration process/system, with more robust communication with families.
Improving the dismissal process, considering the school culture.
Closing rosters earlier in the year to avoid confusion.
Campus School Extended Learning Dismissal
We encourage families to pick up students by car and arrive by 4:20 pm. Dismissal only lasts 10-15 minutes. While picking up at the porch might look like a better option, it is less secure for our students. Thanks for your partnership in keeping our students safe!
If you need to follow up on an invoice, please visit UofM Online Market Place for Campus, & Middle. If you have signed up for an external program, don’t forget to contact our partner organizations!

Welcome to another great year at University Schools!
As our compendium continues to grow, we strive to provide all of our families with high quality interscholastic athletic experiences. As we closed the 2022-2023 school year, our athletes were qualifying and competing in city and state championship competitions in Memphis, Murfreesboro, and Clarksville! Way to go Tigers!
Our fall season for athletics began even before the first day of school. Our Cross Country, Volleyball, Golf, and Soccer athletes were working hard during the summer as they prepared for the upcoming season. This hard work is paying off as our fall sports teams compete all Memphis and West Tennessee.
This year, you can expect to see our athletes competing in a variety of sports and activities as we’ll soon transition into the winter and spring seasons. We appreciate all who lend a hand to support University Schools Athletics, especially the hard work and dedication of our coaches. Without them, none of this would be possible!

As our schools grow, so does our need for athletic facilities to practice and compete. Our partnerships with the University of Memphis, Campus Recreation, Transportation, College of Health Sciences, MSCIAA, Shelby Farms Park, and Memphis Youth Athletics are just a few that have played a major role in our ability to host quality athletic programs. This year we are excited to partner with the Memphis Sports and Events Center (MSEC) and The Blue Line! Our Volleyball programs have been cruising in comfort on the Blue Line and practicing in the amazing MSEC! As basketball season approaches, our hoopers will also be riding the Blue Line and practicing at the MSEC! More to follow on opportunities through our MSEC partnership!
