Parenting Corner (The One Pager)
Believe it or not, we have entered the time of the year when we really start thinking about next year! As we prepare for next year, we have started creating class lists (this process remains somewhat fluid until just before school starts because of a number of variables that can change over the summer: students can move; teachers can move; etc.). During this process, we look at various pieces of data: reading ability, academic strengths, social development, etc. and we would like a piece of data from you! While we obviously can not entertain parents requesting specific teachers for their child(ren), we would love some specific input from you and your child(ren)!
Your child should be bringing home today (or it could be Monday) a piece of paper that has four large, blank boxes on one side and is titled “One-Pager” and on the other side has specific questions on the back (a Spanish version is also going home). The “One Pager” asks for kids (and parents) to identify the students “Strengths, Preferences, Interests, and Needs” (S.P.I.N.). Please take some time this weekend or early next week to complete this with your child(ren) and then return it to your child’s teacher. For some more information (and a digital version you can complete and return to your child’s teacher), please go here:

Field Day
Field Day!
We are only one month away from Field Day which is scheduled for Monday June 2. This event could not happen without the support of our wonderful parents who volunteer their time to come and work a station for our students. Field Day parent volunteer letters should have come home this week, so check those backpacks for a bright orange sheet of paper!
How can you help?
1. If you are able to come and work at a station from 8:30-12:30 , please return the form and let us know. If you are able to help set up between 7:00-8:30 AM, we would appreciate that as well!
2. Donate items! There is a list of items that we are looking for this year. These include: splash balls that are baseball or softball size, bubble wand tubes, and/or Bunch 'O Balloons (rapid fill water balloons). We also need some limited quantities of a few items that cost slightly more so if you are interested in helping with that, just reach out to Ms. Botkin or Mr. Harris for more details.
Just a reminder that Field Day is for MVES students only and that volunteers are working a station. We also ask that you make childcare arrangements for other children.
We are looking forward to another successful event. Thank you!
Courtyard Help
Only half the weeds are here! Thanks to some help from a few TA students, 3 sections have been weeded in the courtyard. Still looking for a few volunteers to help with the last two sections. Anytime from 8-3:30 is great, just call the office and let them know when you are coming in or email lroeschley@rockingham.k12.va.us

May. Week 1: Earth’s Resources: Power Up! A Scavenger Hunt
Observation: There was a storm and the power went out for a while. None of the lights worked!
Question: How many things in my home need energy (or electricity) - what needs to be charged or plugged into the wall in order to work?
Investigation Challenge:
Fill out the table to list things that need electricity to work and those that don’t.
Results:
Take a picture and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflection:
When I plug something into the wall or charge it, where is that electricity (or energy) coming from?
Click THIS LINK for games and information from NASA for kids about sources of energy for next week!

Dear Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Community,
At Kona Ice, we live by a simple yet powerful motto: Be Good. Do Good. For Good. As Teacher Appreciation Week quickly approaches, we at Kona Ice of Harrisonburg, are calling on you to help us recognize the incredible teachers who make a difference every single day.
Think about that one teacher who always goes above and beyond—staying late to tutor, running a club, or simply making your school a better place through their unwavering dedication. We want to celebrate the educators who embody the spirit of our motto.
Take a moment to nominate a teacher who has made a lasting impact on your student's life! Nominations are open until May 4th at 6:00 PM, so don’t wait. You can submit your nomination here: Nominate a Teacher.
During Teacher Appreciation Week, we’ll spotlight a nominated teacher each day and, on Friday, May 9th, we’ll announce the 2025 Kona Ice of Harrisonburg Outstanding Teacher! This remarkable educator will be treated to delicious goodies and much-needed classroom supplies as a token of our gratitude.
We can’t do this without you! Please share this with your social network so we can reach as many people as possible and help us show our teachers how much they’re valued and appreciated for the life-changing impact they have every day.
With gratitude,
Matt Kinman
