Thanks for a Successful First Week!

August 22, 2025
Dear Avon Lake City Schools Families,
The first week of school for the 2025-2026 school year is officially in the books with a safe, smooth, and successful return to classrooms by our students and staff. Visiting each of the buildings on the first day of school provided an opportunity to see the kindness, overall positive emotion and sincere care that families take in preparing their students for school, especially among our youngest students. Joy and excitement were certainly observed among students, staff, and parents alike, and so too was a little positive nervousness, which is to be expected. Everyone in the Avon Lake City Schools is part of a special family and a true sense of belonging was experienced at all buildings. That’s a very special thing and makes Avon Lake unique. Thank you all!
It's a Whole New Ball Game: Bond Sale to Avon Lake Citizens Opens October 1st
We’re setting the bases for a whole new ball game, topped with exploratory and information meetings geared toward our design and construction process. While providing feedback will be an opportunity, another very unique and helpful chance for you to play a role in the construction of the new grades 5-8 building is to participate in the purchase of bonds that will be issued for this new building. These bonds will be priced on September 22nd, and will go on sale on Wednesday, October 1st. We would love for our ALCS citizens to be among the very first investors in this project for years to come. Keep on the lookout for more information in the future.
The ALCS has also constructed a comprehensive website that provides regularly updated information, timelines, pictures, and more on our Future Planning for Facilities page. You can see this information here, which will continue to grow in detail and specifics as time goes on. We want to keep the community informed of our progress as best as possible!
ALHS is #1 in Lorain County, #25 in Ohio, with Major Jump in U.S. News & World Report Rankings
Congratulations to the entire staff, students, and families at Avon Lake High School for making a significant jump in the recently released U.S. News and World Report rankings for this year, which were announced earlier this week. Our very own high school was ranked #1 in Lorain County, ranked #8 in the Cleveland metro area, ranked #25 in the State of Ohio, and ranked #722 nationwide. This, up from one year ago in 2024, where ALHS ranked #1 in Lorain County, #10 in the Cleveland metro area, #34 in the State of Ohio, and #842 nationwide.
This milestone reflects the high standards and achievement of everyone in the Avon Lake City Schools at all levels, as the accomplishment and work in each grade compounds year-after-year to produce these high marks. Your hard work, teamwork, focus on conversations about data and implementing it into teaching and learning best practices, teacher evaluation discussions, implementation of new programming to help all students such as Shoremen Academy, building-level professional development, and focusing on what is best for students has helped elevate you to an even higher standard. College readiness, depth of curriculum, graduation rate, and state proficiency rate all factor into this U.S. News and World Report ranking. This, along with the increase in the AP scores reported over the summertime, and our students, staff, and families, are among the finest in the country.
Staff Milestone Service Years Recognized at Convocation This Week
Before students returned to the classroom, our entire ALCS staff gathered in the HS cafeteria and auditorium for an inspirational few hours to prepare for the coming school year. Special guest speaker, former ALCS Board of Education member, and past parent Ron Jantz encouraged our staff with stories and pictures in a presentation filled with encouragement for love, respect, competition, patience, and more. Thank you, Ron! We also celebrated the following teachers for their longevity of service to the Avon Lake City Schools. Please join me in recognizing the following individuals for their service to our students and schools!
We’re stepping into the batter’s box for the 2025-2026 school year for what we expect will be a home run season for instructional achievement and extra-curricular successes. We ask for your help and continued support along the way. The Avon Lake City Schools is the finest school community in which to learn, work, support, and grow. You all make this possible.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Joelle M. Magyar
Superintendent of Schools
