Attendance Information
Indiana Gateway Digital Academy
All Students enrolled for the entire school year MUST attend 180 Instructional Days. The Total Instructional Days are Prorated Based on the Student's Start Date
Attendance Matters
(learn more at attendanceworks.org)
1. Half the students who miss 2 – 4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
2. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
3. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
4. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month, and that’s known as chronic absenteeism.
5. When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
What Constitutes Attendance?
Attendance is the combination of online, offline and supplemental learning instructional time. Attendance may also include unique situations such as students placed in therapy centers, alternative settings or programs. Daily attendance is verified by evidence of participation in instructional opportunities.
Learning opportunities of instructional time include but are not limited to:
• interacting with the curriculum;
• progress made in the curriculum;
• assignment submissions;
• online Class Connect sessions attended;
• completion of internal assessments;
• and other offline resources.
How Attendance is Tracked?
How is Attendance Calculated?
Students are expected to school daily.
If a class is optional or canceled the student would need to log in time in the other areas.
If class is required the student MUST attend.
To be counted present for the day: Attendance is tracked by a combination of the following:
Attendance in the scheduled Class Connect Session
Watching the recording of a missed Class Connect Session
Attendance in homeroom
Attending small groups and meetings
Working in the courses; tests, quizzes, assignments, overdue assignments, etc.
At the end (logging off); the time is calculated for the day and submitted in a report.
If a student has zero minutes; they are counted absent.
But I am on the Flex/Aync Program
Even if you are on the Flex/Async program you are still required to log in daily and do work.
How Do I Watch a Recording of a Class Connect Session?
If you do not see a recording reach out to the teacher.
We Understand You May Need To Be Absent.
Indiana Gateway Digital Academy understand that there may be circumstances that require a student to not attend during a school day. Absences must be reported by the parent or legal guardian to be excused.
The absence can be reported through written notification by completing the attendance form https://forms.office.com/r/ywDYLCXc2r.
Just because an absence is reported it does not mean it has been excused. See section on what is an "excused absence".
Also, please let your Homeroom teacher know that you will be absent.
Absences must be reported within 7 days. Excuses submitted beyond this timeframe, or for another family member's appointments or illness, will not be accepted.
Students Cannot Email attendance@ingda.net
What is an Excused Absence?
Absences will be considered excused for legitimate reasons, including but not limited to:
• illness verified by note from parent/guardian;
• illness (physical, mental, maternity, etc.) verified by note from Physician’s office or hospital;
• funeral and bereavement;
• religious holiday;
• military connected absences;
• state fair participation or any other reasons exempted by Indiana Code to be recorded as absent.
Absences due to illness; we can excuse two days (within a week) without a document; further days do require a doctor's note.
Absences must be reported within 7 days. Excuses submitted beyond this timeframe, or for another family member's appointments or illness, will not be accepted.
Another Family Member Has an Appointment?
If student’s family member has an appointment, testing, etc.; student is still expected to school.
One of the benefits of being an online school is that you can do your school work from any location or watch the recording at a later time.
Absences must be reported within 7 days. Excuses submitted beyond this timeframe, or for another family member's appointments or illness, will not be accepted.
Asynchronous Day
Asynchronous learning refers to courses where students access course materials—lectures, readings, and assignments—on their own time. Learning, in other words, takes place at all different times for students enrolled in a course, because there's no set class time.
In other words-- on Asynchronous learning days, there will not be any live class connect sessions. Your student will however, be required to log in an do work.

Truancy
What is Truancy?
Indiana Code 20-18-2-2.4 defines “chronically absent” as missing ten percent (10%) or more of a school year for any reason. That’s equal to about 18 absences per school year.
Students meeting the Habitual Truancy qualification must be withdrawn from Indiana Gateway Digital Academy Schools per IC 20-19-9-5.
Truancy Notification
Prior to your absences reaching the 18 day Truancy mark there will have been several attempts made by our staff to reach you by phone and email. If you have questions or need to report an absence, you will need to reach out to attendance at attendance@ingda.net.
Once your student's absences reach 18 unexcused days with no communication from the family, the next steps in the Truancy process will be taken and your student will be withdrawn from INGDA.
What Happens If My Child is Withdrawn Due to Truancy?
If a student is withdrawn due to Habitual Truancy, Indiana Gateway Digital Academy will:
• Report the student to Child Protective Services with concerns of Education Neglect
• Report to the Indiana State Police Clearinghouse for missing children
• May call the local law enforcement agency to confirm child welfare
• Not allow the student to re-enroll for the remainder of the current school year
