When Student Initiative Meets Teacher Support

A pair of JTES fourth graders recently turned their curiosity and enthusiasm into an impressive accomplishment.

After discovering NPR's annual Student Podcast Challenge, Emme Molberger and Ryan Brady became excited about the opportunity to create and submit an original podcast to the national competition. Rather than letting the idea remain just that—an idea—they brought it to their teacher, Mrs. Erin Trunk, and asked if she would be interested in helping them participate.

Recognizing the rich learning opportunity the challenge presented, Mrs. Trunk eagerly agreed. Together, they spent time brainstorming ideas, writing a script, discussing meaningful questions, and recording their podcast for submission. This year's challenge invited students in grades 4–12 to create a podcast on a topic of their choice while reflecting on the ideals of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

What began as student initiative grew into a meaningful learning experience through the support and guidance of a teacher willing to invest her time and energy beyond the school day. The project challenged Emme and Ryan to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate, and persevere through a creative process that culminated in a finished product they could proudly share.

We are incredibly proud of Emme and Ryan for taking the initiative to pursue this opportunity and grateful to Mrs. Trunk for recognizing its value and helping them bring their vision to life. Their work is a wonderful example of the powerful things that can happen when student curiosity meets teacher support.

Congratulations to Emme, Ryan, and Mrs. Trunk on this outstanding accomplishment!

A Special Visit from the Upper Dublin Public Library

There was plenty of laughter in our library on Friday, May 22, when Mr. Robbie, the Children's Programming Librarian from Upper Dublin Public Library, visited students in every grade. With his trademark humor, silly songs, and contagious enthusiasm, Mr. Robbie had students laughing, singing along, and getting excited about reading all summer long.

During his visit, he introduced students to the Upper Dublin Public Library's Summer Reading Club 2026, which runs from June 21 through August 9, and shared information about the many programs, activities, and events available to families throughout the summer.

Be sure to check your child's backpack for the neon orange flyer that was sent home with all the details. Click here for more information about the Summer Reading Club and upcoming library events.

As the school year comes to a close, there are still a few meaningful ways to celebrate the people who made it special. Say thank you to a teacher, staff member, or bus driver who made an impact on your child's school year with a Cardinal Kudos. Each honoree will receive a special UDEF certificate in recognition of your gift.
