Hey GMS family,
I was checking out the ParentGuidance website and explored the "ask a therapist" section. It's full of questions that I often find myself asking, with really short video explanations. The first one I clicked on was, "how do I overcome one-word answers to questions?" These questions are all answered by certified therapists, and the response was super helpful! First, there was validation (welcome to the teenageville club) and then there were great tips. Here's a snapshot of what I learned in case you are going through the same thing! One helpful approach is to ask more open-ended questions. For example: “I need your feedback on something—what’s your thought on this?” That invites them into the conversation. You might also ask, “What was the most difficult thing that happened at school today? And what was the most enjoyable?” Or, “Did anything interesting or fun happen today?” Now, even if you do get a one-word response like “nope,” you can play with it a little. For example: “Really? Nothing interesting happened today? School is that boring?” Keep it light and playful. The key is to stay engaged and curious, and even a little playful. If they say “fine,” you might respond with, “Define fine—what does fine mean to you?” You’re not interrogating—you’re inviting. By keeping the tone light and showing genuine curiosity, you create a space where your child is more likely to open up and share.
There are hundreds of other questions on this site and you can even submit your own. ParentGuidance is a free resource for all GWSD families, and if you need help logging in, want more info, or have any questions, please reach out. Go, Mustangs!

Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)
Each year, students in Colorado participate in state-required assessments that provide valuable information to families, educators, and the community. These assessments are mandated by state and/or federal law and help ensure that all students receive a high-quality education aligned to Colorado Academic Standards. Results help us understand how well students are meeting grade-level expectations and guide instructional planning and program improvement across the district.
