Dear Lake Travis ISD Staff and Parents/Guardians,

Due to a number of safety and operational concerns surrounding the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, Lake Travis ISD has made the decision to close schools for all students and staff. Because we have reserved a sufficient number of instructional minutes for the current school year, students will not be required to make up this day.

According to NASA, at approximately 1:36 p.m. on April 8, Central Texas will experience a total solar eclipse. As a result, local officials and first responders anticipate a significant influx of visitors for this extraordinary event, straining local infrastructure and resources and potentially impacting school operations. The decision to close our schools reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff during this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We acknowledge that a solar eclipse of this magnitude is a unique educational opportunity which is creating much anticipation and excitement across our district. While our schools will be closed on April 8, rear assured our students will engage in classroom activities leading up to the event. It is our sincere hope that staff, students, and families across Lake Travis ISD will safely witness this celestial phenomenon and create lasting memories together.

Sincerely,

Paul Norton

Superintendent of Schools

We are thrilled to announce that We are thrilled to announce that

Mrs. Chelsea Hill, WCHE Music Teacher, is Mrs. Chelsea Hill, WCHE Music Teacher, is

TEACHER OF THE YEAR at West Cypress Hills Elementary! TEACHER OF THE YEAR at West Cypress Hills Elementary!

Congratulations, Mrs. Hill! Congratulations, Mrs. Hill!

zoom_out_map

Mrs. Hill is in her tenth year of teaching, and we are happy to report that nine of those years have been with West Cypress Hills Elementary. Being a music teacher has been a lifelong dream of Mrs. Hill. She grew up in a home that was always filled with music, and she has always wanted to be a music teacher. Fortunately for our Tigers, her dream was fulfilled on our campus.

Mrs. Hill attended Sam Houston State University and achieved her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. Her favorite instruments to play are the flute, piano, and ukulele. She also has been gifted with an amazing singing voice. Those who have attended any of our campus choral events can attest to her talent as a singer.

Our Tigers love Mrs. Hill's music classes, for she makes learning great fun. She creates all manner of intriguing music games and activities for our Tigers to enjoy. They have so much fun that they may not realize how much they are actually learning about music in the progress.

Mrs. Hill is also our "magician" who turns our afternoon dismissal for car riders into a well-organized and efficient event. She is sort of like the Wizard of Oz, working all manner of equipment in our Gym in the afternoons to ensure our car-riding Tigers make it to the correct vehicle at the correct time.

We all are so pleased to elect Mrs. Chelsea Hill as our West Cypress Hills Teacher of the Year. And, in the following photos and article about our Honor Choir, you'll see yet another reason why she is our Teacher of the Year.

Tiger Honor Choir

We are very proud of our Tiger Honor Choir Members. You may recall, we celebrated Music in our Schools month in March, and our Honor Choir performed with other elementary Honor Choirs at the Lake Travis High School Performing Arts Center on March 27. It was a very exciting evening, and the music was grand.

Our Honor Choir Students are:

Maxine Banner

William Bouillon

Scarlett Cummings

Noelani Garcia

Avery Guerra

Hayli Martinez

Ruby McAshan

Teresa Mondragon

Pepper Nugent

Beau Tolmachoff

Zoe Wigham

Congratulations to our Music Teacher, Mrs. Chelsea Hill, and to our Tiger Honor Choir. Well done, all!

Have a super interesting career?

If so, we hope you are willing to be a guest speaker for WCHE's Career Day on Thursday, May 9! We would be honored for you to share your expertise and excitement about your career with our students! By introducing our Tigers to a broad range of career possibilities, we hope to ignite new interests as they consider their future careers.

We are looking for parents or community members who would be willing to speak to classes of students about their jobs, when they first knew that they wanted to pursue this career, what was required to get them in that position (education,) how their job relates to their interests now, the most rewarding part of their job, and the most difficult part of their job. They will also have an opportunity to "show and tell" with props, photos, video clips, or demonstrations. Finally, they will be able to answer student questions.

Speakers will present to a particular grade level on Thursday, May 9, and they will present 4-5 sessions approximately 20 - 25 min each. Speakers will be selected by our Social Emotional Learning Team with the goal of representing a variety of career fields. If we have multiple volunteer speakers from similar career fields, speakers will be selected randomly.
