Welcome Back! Spring Into Action!
Dear Bison families,
We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful spring break! It's hard to believe we're already in April—a month filled with excitement, celebration, and important milestones for our school community.
SOL Testing Season: State standardized testing begins this month for 8th graders, with 6th and 7th grade kicking off at the very beginning of May (see the "SOL Dates" section below for specifics). These assessments are an important measure of student learning, and we're committed to helping every student grow. Our teachers have been preparing students throughout the year, and we're beginning to have students work on further growth, review and confidence.
How You Can Support Your Child: April is busy, both at school and at home. With testing, celebrations, and end-of-year preparation in full swing, students and staff need your partnership now more than ever. Here's how you can help:
- Ensure adequate sleep: A well-rested student performs better on tests and copes better with stress.
- Maintain open communication: Ask your child about their day, their concerns, and their progress. Let teachers know if you see changes in behavior or attitude.
- Limit screen time, especially before bedtime: this will help your child rest better and support their mental and emotional health. It also gives your child an important break from the social pressures of school, which tend to follow them home through social media.
- Attend school events: Your presence at celebrations and activities shows students that you value their achievements, and BGMS students love to interact with our community.
- Reach out if you have concerns: Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher or our office. We're here to support your family.
TOGETHER, we are BISON STRONG!

What truly sets Ms. Turner apart for Mr. Lunger is her absolute trustworthiness and her willingness to roll up her sleeves and jump into all of the work it takes to run a school. She's a dedicated educator who leads by example every single day. We are incredibly blessed and truly lucky to have Ms. Turner's leadership and heart at Buffalo Gap. Thank you for all you do!
BGMS Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Lotts!
We are so excited to share that Mrs. Allison Lotts has been selected as the Buffalo Gap Middle School Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Lotts teaches Ag and leads our award winning FFA program, but that only scratches the surface of her excellence. Mrs. Lotts contributes and leads wherever she is needed. She loves students and brings passion into her classroom. She sees a need and throws herself into helping others. She doesn't do these things for accolades and attention - it is just who she is. Mrs. Lotts invests in others and is an ambassador for agriculture in our region, state and country. We are blessed that she is a Bison and our community is a better place because of her. Congratulations Mrs. Lotts!

We love chances for families to participate in the life of BGMS. We have many opportunities throughout the year for families to join us on field trips, supervise events and help in classrooms. If you would like the school to have a volunteer form on file, please download the attached form, fill it out, and send it back to school with your student.
STOPit App
As the year begins, we want to remind you that STOPit is still here to support your student’s safety and well-being. The app provides a safe, anonymous way for students to report concerns, get help, or find resources—anytime, anywhere.
With STOPit, students can:
- Submit a Tip — Share something serious without giving their name
- Crisis Text Line — Connect 24/7 with a trained mental health counselor
- Resources — Access help for needs like food, shelter, bullying, or anxiety
Your encouragement can make a difference—please take a moment to remind your student how to access STOPit:
- Open the app or download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play
- Search for our school in the list or enter the school code
- Accept the terms—and they’re ready to go!
Thank you for helping us keep our school community safe and supported.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Event Information
Event Information
Eligible students will receive a permission form on Monday, April 6. These signed forms must be returned with the admission fee by Thursday, April 9th. Fun Afternoon lasts from 3:15 until parents pick students up at 5:00 PM. See permission form for details!
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Cafeteria Information
Breakfast and Lunch are offered free again this year for ALL students. A la carte items can be purchased during your student's lunch period. Students may either pay in cash or by having money on their account.
Safety
Students and visitors will enter the building and move through our weapons detectors daily. Just as last year, note that zippered binders are not permitted due to weapons detector procedures. Regular notebooks/binders and zippered pencil pouches are acceptable; however, some items must be removed from the backpack and reviewed by our staff at the detector stations. Items such as Chromebooks, umbrellas, glasses cases, large scissors, and certain other metal items must be removed before students are able to pass through the detectors.
Chromebook Charging
Students are asked to charge their Chromebooks each evening so they are ready for use each day.
Cell Phones/Smart Watches
Cell phones and smart watches can be a huge distraction in the educational setting. Since our students have Chromebooks, they have all the technology they need for the academic setting. Phones and smart watches must be turned off and stored in backpacks, and students are not allowed to use these during the day at school. If you need to contact your child for an emergency, please call the front office. Students may also come to the office to call home if needed.
RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES
How you can help!
Your support at home makes all the difference. Here are two simple but powerful ways you can set your child up for success:
1. Prioritize Sleep
A well-rested child is a focused learner. During this busy season, extra sleep is even more important than ever. When kids are rested, they:
Concentrate better in class
Retain information more effectively
Show up ready to tackle challenges
2. Ensure Consistent Attendance
Every day counts. Regular school attendance means:
No missed lessons or concepts
Consistent momentum with their peers
More opportunities to practice and grow
