A Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a real joy to return to school this half term and begin to enjoy a welcome turn in the weather. The sunshine has made such a difference to the school day, with children making the most of being outside at lunchtime—playing, socialising and enjoying each other’s company. These simple moments are such an important part of school life and wellbeing.
We have also been delighted to welcome our newest members of the school community. Our Nursery children are settling in beautifully, and it has been a pleasure to see new families joining us for Stay and Play sessions. These early experiences are so important in helping children feel confident, secure and ready to begin their journey with us.
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended our recent Parents’ Evening. It was wonderful to see so many of you in school, meeting with teachers and discussing your child’s progress. These conversations are invaluable in ensuring we continue to work together to support every child to flourish.
If you were unable to attend, please do contact the school office to rearrange your appointment. It is important that all parents have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher and stay fully informed about their learning and development.
Best wishes,
Miss Nottage
Welcome to Tanjin
Punctuality Matters
We have noticed an increase in pupils arriving late to school, particularly in Nursery and Reception.
A reminder that gates open at 8:45am, and the Early Years gate remains open until just after 9:00am.
Arriving on time helps children settle well and begin their learning positively. Late arrivals also place additional pressure on office staff at the busiest time of day. Please support us by ensuring your child arrives promptly and enters through the correct gate.
Book Fair and Competition
We are excited to be hosting a Book Fair in school! It will take place after school from 3:30–4:15pm on the following dates:
- Friday 1st May
- Tuesday 5th May
- Wednesday 6th May
We also have £5 book vouchers to give away and will be running a competition titled:
✏️ “My Favourite Book” Poster
How it works:
Children are invited to create a mini poster that includes:
- The title of their favourite book
- A drawing inspired by it
- A short explanation of why they like it
Entries should be submitted to me by Wednesday 29th April. We look forward to seeing lots of creative entries!
Road Works Cancelled
The previously scheduled roadworks have now been cancelled, thanks to the collective efforts of local headteachers who raised concerns with the local authority. The works have been rescheduled for the summer holidays, helping to minimise disruption for families.
PE and Swimming Lessons
- Year 2/3 (Miss Phelan’s class): swimming every Monday morning
- All other classes: PE on Tuesdays
Children must wear the correct PE kit, including trainers. We are seeing a number of children attempting to take part in unsuitable footwear, which is unsafe. If children do not have the correct kit, they will need to miss the lesson.
Holiday Childcare Scheme
The Tower Hamlets Holiday Childcare Scheme will run from Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th May during the upcoming half term. The scheme will take place at our school, although this does not give our pupils priority access.
Further information can be found here:

Medication in School
We are currently checking all medication held in school, including inhalers and adrenaline auto-injectors.
If your child’s medication is close to expiring, please provide a replacement as soon as possible. You will also receive email notifications where medication has expired—please do check these carefully.
Parent Pay Update
Thank you for your patience while Tanjin has been settling into her role. We are now able to upload payments for clubs and after-school childcare onto ParentPay. Please look out for updates over the coming week.
School Uniform - Summer Term
Children may now wear their summer uniform. Full details are available on our website:
A reminder that any trainers worn should be completely black and in line with school expectations.
Nursery and Reception parents - please ensure your child has a change of clothes, including underwear and shoes if possible. We will be outside a lot this term and this includes water play. Whilst we try our hardest to keep children dry, they will get wet so a change of clothes is helpful.
A reminder that in hot weather children must have a water bottle, a sun hat and sun cream (at least factor 30) applied before school and in their bags for reapplication during the day.
Attendance
Our attendance for the year to date: 93%
This is a way off our target of 96%. Please support your child to attend every day - missing school, even just one day, puts your child behind and limits their success which none of us want!
Attendance this term:
St John's Class: 89%
Nursery: 95%
Reception: 97%
Y1: 91%
Y2/3: 92%
Y3/4: 95%
Y5/6 (Mr Joseph): 95%
Y5/6 (Miss Harrison): 90%
Breakfast Club
Breakfast club opens at 8:00am every day, there is no need to pre-register. A daily charge of £3 applies, all food included.
Growing in Faith Together
Gospel Reflection – John 10:1–10
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd and the gate for the sheep. He reminds us that he knows each one of us, cares for us, and wants us to be safe and happy. He says, “I have come so that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
This is a reassuring message for children: Jesus is always looking out for us, guiding us, and helping us to make good choices. Like a shepherd who protects and leads their sheep, Jesus walks with us each day.
You might like to reflect together at home:
- Who helps to guide and care for you?
- How can we listen to Jesus’ voice in our lives?
- What does it mean to live life “to the full”?
A Prayer for Home
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for being our Good Shepherd.
Thank you for loving us, guiding us, and keeping us safe.
Help us to listen to your voice
and to follow you in all that we do.
Help us to care for others, just as you care for us.
Amen.
